Hi,

I live in France, I earn a decent amount but nothing crazy.

My gross monthly pay is between 3.8k€-4.9k€ ( £3.2k - £4k).

Early thirties/single/no dependents

My monthly take home after tax is around 2.7k€-3k€ (£2.3k-£2.5k)

A relative in the UK ( who I don't particularly want to share my payslip with ) is incredulous that I don't take home more and does not seem to believe me ...

The main deductions are

National Insurance +/- 900 euros a month
Lunch voucher contribution 80 euros a month
Income Tax +/- 400 euros a month

I'm attaching an anonymized payslip ( in any case : fuck off daily mail ) that I've tried to briefly explain (in red).

AIBU to ask someone earning roughly the same amount to walk me through what a payslip for someone earning £40K a year in the UK would look like ? (Also sometimes I wonder about coming back to the UK for work and tend to think I would need a higher gross salary - perhaps this is not the case ...)

Thank you in advance for any info.

You don't need to see another payslip - just use an online service (google "Take home calculator UK) or use this one. www.moneysavingexpert.com/tax-calculator/ They show what NIC and Tax you pay, some have options for also calculating tax on benefits like pension and health insurance in the advance options.

@TokyoTen Thanks - How do pension contributions work ? Is there an obligatory minimum? Are they deducted from income tax ?

pension contribution is minimum 5% or you can voluntarily add more of you wish employers minimum contribution is 3%

@Fupoffyagrasshole Thanks -I should have googled - now realizing how simple UK payslips are - It's pretty impossible to get a decent simulation in france given all the different work branch regulations and the number of lines and marginal rates on everything!

You can choose to opt out of a workplace pension too
