To think leaving a dirty mattress outside your house is rank?

I can’t do anything about it. It’s in their front garden. Right next to my living room window.

If I were a potential buyer I wouldn’t even buy a house on my own street.

Aibu to think this is just gross? It’s been there over 2 weeks now.

I wouldn't be happy with this, but my first thought was that they'd arranged a collection and been let down.

What are they like generally? Have they done this sort of thing before?

In our last place, we had horrible neighbours who dumped all kinds of rubbish in their garden for weeks at a time. On the other hand, an older lady a few doors along organised a council rubbish collection for an old couch, was told to leave it in her garden where it remained for a month until someone finally arrived to pick it up. She was really upset by it.

When I bought my house I had to dispose of an old mattress; I wrapped it in a plastic dust sheet (as if it rains and gets waterlogged they may not take it) and taped on a note quoting the Council collection reference and expected removal date. I also told my immediate neighbours as I didn't want them to think a skank had moved in.

I always report fly tipping in my area. It is so lazy and selfish.

RedWingBoots · 16/08/2022 15:40

There is a shortage of HGV drivers which is why with many councils, you can book and pay for a collection on a specific date, put your rubbish out up to a couple of days before, and then the council can take a month to get it removed.

Incidentally I checked with my local council you are allowed to leave your stuff out a few days before but you should label it with the collection date and not obstruct the pavement. Any items you haven't booked as wanting them to collect is considered to be fly tipped.

BashfulClam · 16/08/2022 15:42

We put our old bed outside as the council said ‘it will be collected within 28 days’ gave no date so it had to just sit there for 4 weeks. After 30 days had passed we had to chase them and it was another week before it was finally picked up!

My NDN has dumped a load of clothes in front of their house. Been there 2 weeks. At first the pile was on the pavement, but someone has dropped it over their wall into the front yard (not me honest)

I saw one of them earlier and said " oh no, look, some dirty bugger has dumped their unwanted clothes".

He looked and mumbled something ............ 🙄a

RedWingBoots · 16/08/2022 15:52

@BMW6 if stuff is ever left on the pavement report them on fixmystreet.com for fly tipping.

Most people where I live put it on their wall or on their path, so they don't get accused of fly tipping.

We've booked bulky waste collection from the council before and they've taken weeks to collect it. We were told to put it outside and that they come "that week" (reader, they lied). But we couldn't risk taking it back inside as they won't knock to collect it.

I think if the mattress is all stained it needs to be covered tbh!

Why? What would you use - bin bags? Bit of a waste of plastic!

Christ, it's not hurting anyone.

20viona · 16/08/2022 16:06

I left one outside last week just for one night pending collection and I felt so vile lol.

Jellytottss · 16/08/2022 16:06

@QuestionableMouse no I would just buy a cheap sheet..... because I wouldn't feel comfortable personally having a stained mattress outside my house perfectly reasonable opinion!

Jesus Christ… imagine all these tramps replacing stuff in your “estates” bringing the place down… you poor poor souls… I imagine people would do a bit more research if an area than “oh my god I seen a mattress awaiting collection” 😂😂

Yeah well it sets the tone for the street. A filthy mattress just left there.

No it doesn’t, it means your neighbours are replacing their bed…. Unless you live in a slum? If my neighbours had a mattress outside I’d be certain they’d bought a new bed and it would be uplifted. People are so dramatic

10HailMarys · 16/08/2022 16:34

It took the council more than two weeks to collect our old sofa.

As we neither a) owned a van to take it to the tip or b) lived in a house that had room for two sofas, where else could we have left it other than outside the house? Apologies to any of our old neighbours who might have been trying to sell a house and who lost out on a sale because there was a grotty old faded sofa in our front garden, but I'm afraid that's the way the cookie crumbles.

Stomacharmeleon · 16/08/2022 16:59

@Nap1983 it doesn't actually. Two of my neighbours have numerous mattresses in their front and Back gardens due to the glorious infestation of bed bugs that the row has. And the fact one refuses to treat. They will NOT have them collected even though environmental health and the housing association have asked them to...
As, you know, they haven't got the funds.
They have for weed and fags mind you.
