To really dislike people standing up to eat when there are seating options available?

I'm probably being U.

But it's REALLY ANNOYING when people stand around eating a sandwich or lean against counters with a bowl of cereal in their hand when there's a perfectly good seating option available.

Judging by some people's poor hygiene, I don't blame those who choose not to sit on shared chairs.

.... What deadly disease do you imagine will creep through your clothes and underwear...?

But when I sit down to eat the calories count. When I stand up to eat the food is calorie free, especially if eaten over the sink rather than using a plate.

FrazzledHippy · 16/08/2022 13:12

I work in a kitchen, so, 5 days a week my lunch is eaten standing up, leaning against the back door frame. Why? We don't have time to sit and eat. If we didn't eat this way, you'd be starving for your full 10h shift.

We get a break, but most of us split this down into 5 ten minute incriments so we can make a coffee and relax or go for a smoke. The reality is, if we all took our breaks as the 50m their meant to be, the kitchen would cease to run!

sweeneytoddsrazor · 16/08/2022 13:15

I tend to sit down, but I think that is probably because my DGM and DM used to tell us to sit quietly for 10 mins after eating to ' let the food go down'

Goggin · 16/08/2022 13:16

I don't generally get irritated by much but my DH wandering around while eating his breakfast drives me mad!

Shehasadiamondinthesky · 16/08/2022 13:17

I hate it too. It's just so rude.

SquirrelFan · 16/08/2022 13:17

Teens: It implies they don't want to spend any more time than they have to in the (in our case) kitchen with me.
Husband: wants to scroll on phone. It's particularly annoying when he's directly behind me.

Bizarre

MotherofPearl · 16/08/2022 13:27

I also find it irritating OP. Needless to say I can't control what other people do, but my own DC are only allowed to eat - meals or snacks - sitting down at the table. This is mainly because I can't bear crumbs trailed around through the house though.

DeedIDo · 16/08/2022 14:14

"You're not a horse! Sit down!"

NorthernLights5 · 16/08/2022 18:30

My dad used to eat over the sink if it was something like a slice of toast. Drove my mother mad. He used to do it to piss her off sometimes 😂

What is with all these threads today with people being irritated by things that have nothing to do with them. I couldn't care less how people eat - they can stand on their heads if they want!

Could not agree more @onlythreenow and as a total side issue I had been wondering if it was just me that had noticed this. It’s really been creeping up on MN for the last wee while and - I know this sounds … well but - I do wonder if the average age of MN is going up and there are more retirees who are just more fussy/meddling/prim whatever. Like, busy people do not behave like this. Side note over.

I'd have said MN is looking increasingly immature tbh.

It drives me mad, but only if I’m also eating sat down. I think it’s a personal space thing, as when someone is standing it feels like they’re dominating the space I’m eating in more I suppose

Genius. Washing up free eating. For those of us not posh enough to own a dishwasher 😆

Kanaloa · 16/08/2022 18:52

I agree that some people on mumsnet seem to get really annoyed and worked up by stuff that doesn’t affect them even slightly. Worry about how you’re eating - unless you’ve invited someone for dinner and they’re standing facing the other way while eating a carbonara it shouldn’t bother you if somebody else eats a sandwich standing up.

Kanaloa · 16/08/2022 18:53

Spinasaurus · 15/08/2022 22:05

I can't get mad about standing to eat something quickly.

I get furious with my DH who grew up in an uncivilised home that did not have a dining table for eating a large dinner that needs a knife and fork off his lap on the sofa.

Really? You honestly get ‘furious’ at your husband for eating in his own home in a spot you don’t want him to eat in?

Nugg · 16/08/2022 19:00

Couldn't give a flying fuck. Eat where you like. Eat what you like. I do!

Not like the old days when it was all fields...
