To report neighbour’s dog

MooPiglet · 15/08/2022 19:21

they got the dog during lockdown as a tiny pup so it is still less than 2 years old.

Now they leave the poor thing in the garden all day until they get back home from work.

The dog whines and barks from morning to early evening. Goodness knows what will happen when it gets cold - will they continue to leave it outside?

I am seriously considering reporting them to the RSPCA but am worried that they will find out and make life difficult for me.

WWYD?

If it's got shelter and water I'm not sure the RSPCA will do anything. It's horrible for it to be left alone all day, it's not fair on the dog. Maybe report to council re the noise?

MooPiglet · 15/08/2022 19:29

what would the council do though?

RSPCA won’t do anything, as PP says.

Keep a noise diary and you can report it as a noise nuisance to the council. They’ll send them a letter…

Have you talked to them about it? Do they know their dog is distressed in the days when they’re out?

MooPiglet · 15/08/2022 19:41

I haven’t because if I did report them they would know it was me

Why don’t you want them to know that there is a problem with the dog?

Are they scary?

godmum56 · 15/08/2022 19:55

what i would do is keep a diary, make recordings and contact the council.

Maybe they aren’t aware though!

TabithaTittlemouse · 15/08/2022 20:00

Aware that it barks all day I mean

Tinktravels · 15/08/2022 20:03

I'm pretty sure as long as a dog is fed and watered with shelter that they won't even care at all

MooPiglet · 15/08/2022 20:06

Even if they aren’t aware it’s still bloody irresponsible to leave a dog alone all day, everyone knows that!

I will start keeping a diary with recordings for the council although I’m not sure what they can actually do apart from sending a letter.

We have had the same problem with two local dog owners. They bought their cute puppies when they were at home during lockdown, never trained them and now they are back at the office, they bark all day and into the early evening. I was told the local dog warden can give advice and perhaps the RSPCA, however, a local councillor said their may be an alternative. This is something we are going through at present and I am just out of hospital and in hellish pain so not back on my computer yet. I hope to be able to check my mail by Friday. On compulsory bed rest at present. If you are still not sorted by then, I will update you on advice we have been given. Hoping for a solution 🤞

@MooPiglet I left you another comment, but it’s Environmental Health one writes to about the noise. Also it’s illegal for owners to allow their dog to bark all day. They can be prosecuted. Definitely speak to the RSPCA but ask to remain anonymous. I know if our local dog walker heard the young dog, she would report it immediately. It’s heartbreaking as it’s so young, probably suffering from separation anxiety, boredom or worse. Good luck.

Cantbeliveyoufakeit · 15/08/2022 20:59

RSPCA will do nothing, I know because I have the same situation with NDN's dog and have tried to get them to help, they won't unless dogs life is in immediate danger. First thing I would do is speak to NDN, (or send a note if you really can't face it) and ask whether they realised the dog is barking for hours. You can do it nicely, centred around concern for the dog and that they may not realise it's happening rather than a complaint about noise for now.

If that fails you're left with a noise complaint to the council (slow and annoying as they will want a noise diary etc before they'll even think about doing anything) and, if you're really lucky and your council still has one, a report to the dog warden. That's it, that's all the recourse you have I'm afraid but, if it helps at all, I do know exactly how you feel!
