To be pleasantly surprised that the cinema cost has gone down

Haven't been to the cinema for a while but went today and was informed if you book online or via the app its £5 for every performance day or evening.
Amazed as going
to the cinema was expensive.
Sales assistant hinted that more and more people were watching Netflix now so got the impression they had to reduce price to get customers in
Nice to see something gone down though in price.

I hope that it works for them - I guess that they will hope that obviously apart from getting more bums on seats, people will buy more food and drink at the counter. I'd be very sorry to see the end of cinema.

girlfriend44 · 15/08/2022 16:43

The food and drink is still very expensive though.

Which cinema please. Assuming it’s a chain.

girlfriend44 · 15/08/2022 16:46

Yes a chain

pinkfondu · 15/08/2022 16:49

There's only one near me out of 3 chains like this and it the one that's had zero investment

abovedecknotbelow · 15/08/2022 16:51

It's £9.99 for a super saver in my local Vue. I get discounts through my work benefits that take it down to £4.99.

I don't particularly like the cinema but take the kids occasionally and we never buy the overpriced snacks / drinks on principle, when there is a massive Sainsbury's right next door.

mondaytosunday · 15/08/2022 16:54

Not round here. It was £17 each to see Spider-Man not so long ago.

Twizbe · 15/08/2022 16:56

This just inspired me to go and look.

I've booked for me and both kids to go to the cinema tomorrow. It cost £7.47!

Bargain.

budgiegirl · 15/08/2022 16:56

That is cheap. Our two nearest chain cinemas are Cineworld and it's up to £15 a ticket, depending on the day/film.

We have unlimited cards, at £18 pp a month, and as we go most weeks, it does work out to be good value, but means we have to go often to get the value. And we never buy food or drinks there! Too expensive.

girlfriend44 · 15/08/2022 16:56

Think it depends on area and whether its one of the older cinemas.

£4.99 online for ours, £5.99 otherwise. The Vue

Tulipvase · 15/08/2022 16:57

Vue have done £5 tickets for ages. Pre covid I’m sure.

That's great.

Has to be online. Normal price if you go through the main desk on arrival
Giving out free water too not very exciting but worth knowing.

I pay £4.99 at Vue too. And food isn’t too bad - £9 or so for a large popcorn and drink (cheap by cinema standards). Can enjoy full cinema experience for £15.

Horcruxe · 15/08/2022 17:00

£3.50 any tickets if it starts before 12

LewisLittUp · 15/08/2022 17:09

My local Vue is cheap, £4.49 but the Supersaver seats. They have the mini Vue weekends (and all through school holidays) where all the tickets are £2.49. Sometimes not the best film or an older film but still much more affordable for a treat out.

We also never buy the cinema food as its just too expensive, we usually get food and drinks from the Poundland nearby.

shootfromthehip145 · 15/08/2022 17:12

Until they ban mobile phones and enforce it in cinema`s, I wont be going back. Phones ruined the experience, not just ringing but glaring screens as people check their messages etc..

SuperLoudPoppingAction · 15/08/2022 17:16

Odeon has saver tickets for screenings sometimes which are fairly cheap.
And just now you can get 5 tickets for not much (£30 if it's a luxe) with Groupon.

It's fab, as long as they stay open.

Anyone who needs someone with them due to disability can get a CEA card and bring them free as well.

I pay monthly though because I go to the cinema at least once a week.

SuperLoudPoppingAction · 15/08/2022 17:17

I really hate people using their phones.
It's only happened once in the last year and a half I've been going, but it made me grumpy.

SpringSparrow · 15/08/2022 17:17

The super saver at my local vue are £7.99, regular £8.99 and vip are £9.99. I think the prices used to be higher. I don’t understand how they charge such different prices though. This is a market town in the South.

Twawmyarse · 15/08/2022 17:20

Yes I've noticed the last few times my dc's have gone that it seems to be cheaper than ever. Obviously with the advent of streaming and movies being on things like virgin and sky within weeks of being released they need to do something to encourage more bums on seats.

Off topic but ds went swimming at a public swimming baths with slides/shoots etc the other day and it was only £3.50! I was really pleasantly surprised.

hellcatspangle · 15/08/2022 17:22

I noticed our local vue is now £7.99, it used to be over £10. Assume they realised it wasn't affordable for a lot of people!

Depends on the age of the cinema it seems.

I love our cinema, £3.50 Monday to Friday, £4.50 Saturday and Sunday

OrangeBananaFish · 15/08/2022 18:16

Our Vue is only a few years old and is £4.99 a ticket. NE town.

We also have an empire close by with a similar price. The Cineworld a slightly longer journey is about £15

Agree I never buy food. Although it has been the case for years (at least since I worked in one during my A levels and Uni - late 90s) that it was always the food where the profits were made. Not the actual tickets.

I love the cinema experience.
