AIBU to complain to Chinese takeaway

We ordered from our usual Chinese takeaway on Saturday night. I used the just eat app and pre ordered (made the order about 5:30 to come at 7.) it turned up around 7:15.

As soon as my husband started eating he said, these chips taste like they've been microwaved. And my spring rolls did feel a bit soggy too. But it was still tasty so we ate it and didn't think anymore of it.

Last night my husband came down with what appears to be food poisoning. Haven't eaten anything else contentious so thinking it's probably come from the Chinese, but no proof obviously.

I'm now thinking they maybe didn't notice the pre order time, cooked the food at 5:30 then realised and sat it aside, microwaving it later. Could this have caused food poisoning and should I complain?

What else did you eat other than chips/spring rolls? Difficult to get food poisoning from deep fried chips and spring rolls.

IMO takeaway chips and spring rolls are a bad idea as they alway go soggy and even worse when stuck in bag for delivery.

You won't have got food poisoning from something that's been set aside for an hour and a half.

If you're fine and it's just your husband then he might have a regular stomach bug or there might have been something in his food which disagreed with him.

Food poisoning is quite a severe condition but everyone seems to default to it as soon as they're sick. Eating something which gives you a slightly dodgy stomach for a few hours is not food poisoning.

abovedecknotbelow · 15/08/2022 09:52

Why does it appear to be food poisoning and not a bug? Did you eat the same?

MichelleScarn · 15/08/2022 09:52

Is he the only one who ate the Chinese?

lickenchugget · 15/08/2022 09:53

If it was the food, then surely you would all have it?

saveforthat · 15/08/2022 09:55

It's unlikely to be food poisoning. Food poisoning is horrendou and if there was anything like those sort of bugs in the food you would both be very very ill.

Did the meal include rice, by any chance? Rice that's been left sitting at room temperature for ages, or reheated inadequately, can give you food poisoning. It usually kicks in very quickly - within about six hours of eating - and lasts for about a day (unlike many other types of food poisoning, which can actually take a few days before they make you feel ill).

If your DH does have food poisoning rather than just a bug, it's unlikely to be at all serious, and I also think you'd have a hard time actually proving anything to the restaurant.

it’s a bit of a myth really that rice spoils very easily, well no more than pasta or anything else. Unless it’s absolutely baking, several hours sat out the fridge is absolutely fine.

purplecorkheart · 15/08/2022 10:26

Chips and Spring Rolls are not a great idea for delivery. They tend to soggy in the bag. However the deep frying would have killed most of the bugs that would cause sickness.
Did anyone else eat these? WHat did he eat over the last few days that others did not. Sometimes it takes a few days for symptoms to appear. Or else it could be a simple bug.

SpiderinaWingMirror · 15/08/2022 10:32

Agree re rice. The devil's work!

Sunnyqueen · 15/08/2022 10:35

Doesn't sound like the food at all. Everyone who'd ate it would be sick and even if it was sat for an hour and a half that really wouldn't be long enough for it to turn. The rice things a myth, I've eaten tonnes of rice that's been reheated, left out whatever and never had a problem.

LetHimHaveIt · 15/08/2022 10:45

Well, 'the rice thing' very definitely isn't a 'myth' 🙄 It's just very unlikely to have been the culprit here.

faw2009 · 15/08/2022 10:47

My guess is unlikely to be food. Is it hot where you are now? Lots of icy drinks in hot weather can bring on watery poo.

Mammyloveswine · 15/08/2022 11:40

Unless you have kept the food and can prove it's the cause (and also prove it's actually food poisoning) then you won't have a leg to stand on im afraid!

Chips and spring rolls are def not going to cause food poisoning!

Was it just your husband who is unwell? Probs just a bog standard bug tbh!

girlmom21 · 15/08/2022 11:43

Food poising generally doesn't take 24 hours to kick in either.

Is he wearing the dressing gown of doom? If not he will be fine

Bananarama21 · 15/08/2022 11:57

There's some bugs going around dd had a sickness bug and now dh both has different things.
