Worried - baby issue

Found out last week that my 4 month old dd has an issue with her hip. She was a breech baby and apparently this can happen. Ultrasound showed one hip was ok, one wasn't but the information I was given was sketchy and all I really know is that we have been referred to another hospital for more investigation. Does anyone know what this might mean? Did your baby have it? What was treatment? I've seen some sort of material splint on Google which looks awful. I'm so worried.

All I can say as a 34 year old woman who needs a double hip replacement... whatever it is they're gunna do. Let them do it.

There wasn't the treatments then that there are now. It's been a lifetime of pain.

I will, of course I will but it looks awful. I have no idea how you're supposed to bath, clean and change a tiny baby wearing a fabric splint that only medical professionals are allowed to fully remove. I was hoping that there would be some kind of physiotherapy option but I don't know enough about it yet.

Ask the drs/nurses about the cleaning/changing/bathing with a splint thing at your next appointment. They will have detailed answers for you!

I was just wondering if anyone else has had this diagnosis and what the treatment/experience was like

My second ds was also breech and had this very mildly. He had to wear two nappies for the first few months of his life to keep his hips in the right position. Then he was fine. There's a whole range of treatment options and you'll be talked through them when the time comes. I know it's easier said than done but step away from Google and try not to borrow trouble ahead of time.

jollymolly33 · 14/08/2022 23:37

Thank you @capedavenger I really appreciate that.
As it's mild and only in one hip I'm hoping there will be a simper solution. However I'm also worrying because she's nearly 5 months already and due to delays with appointments and waiting times she has only just been diagnosed. Google (sorry) says that babies diagnosed after 6 months are more likely to need surgery :-(

Like I say, try not to worry before you know the worst, this is a common problem so whilst treatment might be inconvenient and uncomfortable for a while, you will cope and your baby won't remember. So try not to work yourself up into a panic ahead of time.
Good luck!

Have a look at the STEPS charity. There is lots of information about hip dysplasia and the various splints etc. I know it feels awful just now, but whatever treatment your wee one needs you will all get used to it quickly. You can usually take off the splints for bathing and you won't need to take it off for nappy changing. The hospital will show you exactly how to do everything. My wee one had hip dysplasia in both hips and was wearing a pavlik harness from 4 days old for 6 weeks.
While you're waiting for the appointment, don't swaddle her (if you're doing that) and double nappies can't hurt. Also if your wee one likes a sling/carrier make sure you have a hip friendly one.
Fingers crossed she ll be seen quickly.
