Over paranoid or a reasonable concern?

DH thinks I'm being paranoid and I may well be but thought I'd ask you guys!

Our babies room is at the front of the house. The window only opens side ways (as in it doesn't have one of the little ones on top you can open instead).

I get too paranoid leaving it open all night that someone could climb into his room like someone looking to burgle us for example would see the open window and climb into his room.

DH thinks I'm being silly and we should leave the window open.

So over paranoid or reasonable concern?

Yabu - paranoid. Leave it open.

YANBU - reasonable.

ground floor or above ground?

Pringl · 14/08/2022 22:33

Above but there is a bit of the lounge that sticks out quite a way underneath so wouldn't be overly difficult to climb up if someone was so inclined.

I won't leave any of our windows open at all. I accept I'm paranoid.

Daisy03 · 14/08/2022 22:35

You might possibly be a bit overly paranoid, but I'd be exactly the same. It's the feeling you wouldn't forgive yourself if that tiny what if happened

Yeah exactly. Chance is so tiny I know but still, surely not worth it?

Probably over paranoid but you can get window locks which allow you to leave the window open a small way, we have them on our kids bedroom windows to stop them opening a window far enough to fall out. Search for cable restrictor window locks.

ManateeFair · 14/08/2022 22:37

If someone climbed in, though, I can guarantee you they would simply ignore your baby. Burglars are not looking for babies; it’s not like they can sell him on Gumtree. Even if there was a minuscule chance of kidnappers breaking in, they could do that perfectly easy through any window at all.

If you have your own bedroom window open there’s no reason not to leave your baby’s window open. If you’ve got weather like the weather most of England’s got at the moment, it must be incredibly warm in your son’s room with the window closed.

TastelessMiserySand · 14/08/2022 22:37

I feel the same way. I ended up installing security cables to the windows, which only allow them to open a certain distance (unless unlocked, so you can still open the windows fully when you wish) and are not easily cut through. You can get them in Amazon and easily attach them to double glazed frames.

He has a fan in there

Newyearnewname20 · 14/08/2022 22:42

I know it’s not what you asked originally OP, but could you put a fan in your baby’s room to keep him cool (if you haven’t already got one in there)? I totally get where you’re coming from on not wanting to leave open windows in his room, so just thinking a fan would definitely be a good idea. Also, it makes sense in this heat not to leave windows open anyway, as it avoids bringing in the warm outside air.

Newyearnewname20 · 14/08/2022 22:42

Ah whoops cross posted so missed the fan update!

Forestgate · 14/08/2022 22:47

Blimey! Where do you all live that you can't ever open windows. :-(

Thatboymum · 14/08/2022 22:50

Remember a story in the paper of a woman who left her baby’s window open and a fox came in it and mauled the baby to death I’ve never ever left kids windows open not on the latch lock after that. Ps soz for sharing another fear with you 😂

EmergencyHepNeeded · 14/08/2022 22:55

Surely that wasn't on the first floor though?

Flamingooooooooooooooo · 14/08/2022 23:32

I'm majorly paranoid, happy to admit it. I won't ever go to bed with any window open, especially not in my child's room, unless it's on "the lock".

@Pringl please either get your window changed or keep it closed! My late parents home was burgled like that!

There's always one who comes out with a sneery unhelpful post like this.

What are you after, a list of specific areas?

And even if you were given it, what then?

CactusBlossom · 14/08/2022 23:55

As your little one gets older, there would also be the risk of him exploring and climbing out. Can you fit a guard over the window so air gets through but it bars entry and exit?

whalleyt · 14/08/2022 23:55

we stayed in air bnb once that had huge windows & I would not leave them open as it was easy to climb up. I like to leave windows open so have always had windows that make this possible without having to open the entire window.

gah2teenagers · 14/08/2022 23:56

Yes get the Amazon window restricter lock. Works great.
