Grapes

Does anyone else find them tasteless nowadays? I remember as a child in the 80's popping to the greengrocers at the end of our road and buying big bunches of tiny white grapes in a brown paper bag and they were so sweet and delicious. Same with strawberries only ever around in the summer and again brought from the greengrocer in punnets in paper bags, tasted so different to today.

Yes I was just saying this the other day. Strawberries where a treat and only bought in season with cream and sugar. I was Early 90s baby. Most seem very bland even when in season now

KangarooKenny · 14/08/2022 21:56

Seedless have seeds in them, so why call them seedless ?

SteveHarringtonsChestHair · 14/08/2022 21:58

Have you tried those candy floss grapes? They’re lovely!

Totally agree re strawberries but I don’t remember grapes ever being that nice - mainly as my mum always bought the ones with seeds in Envy

whosaidtha · 14/08/2022 22:04

Most fruit nowadays is just not ripe. It doesn't last long when it is so it's hard to transport and store. The strawberries in my garden are so delicious because they are picked at just the right time.

whenwillthemadnessend · 14/08/2022 22:08

Strawberries from my local PYO are amazing but obvs short season. Supermarket ones pretty lame.

I love massive black grapes you get in a marketNStall but they tend to have pips.

LadyChamberlain · 14/08/2022 22:09

I find grapes tasty but strawberries hit and miss as to whether you get a good batch.

Rebelmcstreettuff · 14/08/2022 22:09

@SteveHarringtonsChestHair
Saw these yesterday in M&S do they actually taste of candy floss?

Keyansier · 14/08/2022 22:10

Personally, over the grape situation, I'm more intrigued to know whatever happened to bloodsuckers (not their actual name but those really tiny red insects in the 80s/early 90s that were everywhere) and why they aren't around any more, and white dog poo.

LadyChamberlain · 14/08/2022 22:10

Blueberries too, sometimes lovely sometimes shite.

FreezyFreezy · 14/08/2022 22:11

I don't feel that grapes have changed, apart from them being seedless now.

We grew our own strawberry plants. They're wild strawberries so they're a different variety from what is in the shop, and are very small, but they taste so much more "strawberry-y". We haven't bought any from the shop this year; they've been ruined for us!

livvyJ · 14/08/2022 22:13

The black ones from M&S are really good. We brought some to a picnic recently with friends and everyone commented on them (sounds weird written down but turns out people appreciate good grapes!)

SomethingOnce · 14/08/2022 22:13

@Keyansier, due to BSE, people stopped giving dogs bones. White poo is the mineral leftover when all the other poo constituents have weathered away.

You're welcome Grin

FreezyFreezy · 14/08/2022 22:14

Just to add to my last post, I tried some apples I picked from an apple-picking event at some orchard. There were several varieties, that are not available from the shops, and each one had its own specific, unique flavour.

OneCup · 14/08/2022 22:17

I find grapes ok. Strawberries, plums and apricots on the other hand...

Iamthewombat · 14/08/2022 22:19

I buy those black sable grapes now, they are the only ones that have a proper grapey taste.

The M&S red diamond strawberries are good, so are Ava and Sweet Eve, but only in season and only British strawberries, nothing else is as good. My husband insists on buying crap Egyptian strawberries in February then wonders why they are tough and watery! I’ve had to ban him for food miles reasons.

Clevs · 14/08/2022 22:19

Tomatoes don't taste as nice as they used to either. No flavour at all these days.

I know the little red bugs you mean. I see them crawling about them on my patio, so they are still around.

Candy Floss grapes are so good. When I buy a punnet, they rarely make it to the fridge.

I have loads of these in my garden too, they like the metal fence. I always just called them ‘those wee red spiders’ but DH like you calls them bloodsuckers which kind of alarms the children.

I’m not sure about grapes but am always amazed by the difference with the strawberries we grow in the garden - they are tiny and knobbly but incredibly flavoursome compared to supermarket ones. V sad really.

Georgeskitchen · 14/08/2022 22:28

Tesco grapes are usually good , the really plump green ones. Nice and firm . The smaller ones always seem to taste a bit sour

Omg I remember bloodsuckers

Hope someone can answer

Don't keep them in the fridge. Eat them at room temp and you'll find they're often what we remember them to be like. There are exceptions of course that taste crap though. Carrots tend to be the same now. 50/50 chance of getting something horrible or something that actually tastes of carrot.

I smooshed a 1980's red insect the other day crawling on my sun lounger. They're really really rare these days but do still exist.

switswoo81 · 14/08/2022 22:37

Strawberries bought from the roadside stalls (SE Ireland) taste nothing like supermarket strawberries especially out of season. Absolutely delicious.
Aldi have the candy floss grapes too they are lovely.

Probably because of all the smooshing....😁

I'm so glad you started this thread.

Am fed up of getting stone fruit that's rock hard one day but turns to mush and attracts fruit flies a few days later.
Grapes taste of nothing.
Oranges aren't juicy and sweet any more.
Clementines have been pointless for a few years.

I live in Kent. Our strawberries have been singularly drab of late.

I'll stick to crisps.
