To have put alarms on the doors?

I have a very inquisitive 19 month old, who’s tall, can open doors, slide latches and climbs on everything ( also can climb out of her cot). I’ve taught her to do the stairs safely but I still don’t want her doing them alone in case she loses her balance. She has already had one tumble down the stairs (which are very steep) because we had an ill fitting stair gate. I’ve since had custom built stairgates put on. We also have one of those upvc front doors that you have to lock from the inside. She can now open this and I’m scared of her getting into the road. This all wouldn’t stress me out so much if it wasn’t for the fact that DH and our other older dc continually leave the front door unlocked and the stairgates open.
DH thinks I’ve gone mad now because I’ve fitted alarms on the front door and the stairgates so if someone opens it it bleeps loudly at them until they close it.
Is this really such a mad thing to do? I figure a bleeping alarm is better than me nagging everyone

YANBU but it really shouldn’t have been necessary.

I’d move her into a bed sharpish though, climbing out of the cot is vv dangerous

@OwlBasket yes I’m going to convert into the toddler bed.

My sister got these when her kids were teeny. It screams ‘back door OPEN!!!’

She still has them (grandkids) and sadly jokes that since she has demenria it’s useful for her husband to know she can’t wander off.

She won't be able to open the front door if you lock it and put the key out of reach.

Sandcastlesinthesky · 14/08/2022 20:41

@Sunnyqueen my others were not like this! Everytime I look at her she’s up to something she shouldn’t be.

The door opens with a twist lever thing. It’s not removable plus it’s not me that leaves the door unlocked!

My little boy is like this! Hes now 2 1/2 and our house is locked up to keep him safe. We also have cameras in certain areas of the house as we have a baby and i cannot always literally see him so can see him on the cameras.

Some may think its over the top but the fact he can unlock doors, outside gates, opening fridge/freezer oven etc we now lock him out of the kitchen, toilet, external doors have locks and safety catches on them. I'd rather be over the top than he gets hurt while I'm sorting the baby.

Its worked well so far and hes used to it now so doesn't try and do things hes not meant to do near as much as when he was 18-24 months old.

Sandcastlesinthesky · 14/08/2022 20:53

@abbs1 hard work isn’t it? What safety catches/ locks do you have for the external doors ?

Flip me it is isn't it!
So our front door has the main lock and then the security safety chain as the main lock is one you turn and then open the door so the safety chain stops him opening the door and getting out as he knows how to turn the lock.
The back door has a key that he found he could stand on his trike and turn the key and open it. So that is locked and key out of reach but if its open for playing in the garden both our back gates out of the garden have a latch, a gate bolt and each has a padlock as well. Sounds extreme but he can undo the latch and bolt.
All cupboards, drawers, and doors inside have locks as he gets into all kinds of stuff. Hes figured out about 4 locks so weve had to try a few before we found one he cant open.

You can change the lock so that it needs a key rather than a thumb turn to lock and unlock it. It's a fairly simple DIY job, there are YouTube videos which will show you how if you've never done it before.

Sandcastlesinthesky · 14/08/2022 22:10

You’re encouraging me! I’ve just bought
more locks for our garden gate. DH can fit them tomorrow 😂

Hes like a border collie. I have to take him out somewhere everyday for a bit otherwise he tears the house apart bless him. Honestly he doesn't sit down all day. Always doing something bless him. The one bit of time i get a break is when he has his naps.
I am lucky though as he is super helpful with things and he loves helping mummy so he helps me load and unload the washing machine, hoovering thats his absolute favourite! Asks to do it all the time, helps to get things for his baby sister etc. I think getting them to help you is really good as then its fun for them but your getting things done at the same time.
