…to think that you need an address for a driving licence?)

Evening all!

I’m a bit of a nomad and live all over for various reasons- primarily to save and not ‘squander’ £950pcm on someone else’s mortgage.

I’ve previously used a parent’s address for my driving licence (and my car does currently actually spend a lot of time at this address).

This parent will be moving next year and although I’ve googled I still don’t really know how/if it’s possible to change the address on my driving licence without a truly permanent address. I know I can get all post rerouted to a mailbox etc, but what happens- will it say Name: Jane Doe
Address: PO Box SW19 or whatever?? I can’t imaging that working, and would employees etc be put off?

If anyone wiser could advice, I’d appreciate it!

Thanks.

Are you sofa surfing? Can’t you use parents new address?

toffeechai · 14/08/2022 18:59

YANBU to think you need an address for a driving license.

YABU to expect other people to pay for you to have one.

Cervinia · 14/08/2022 19:02

What address do you use for your car insurance? All sounds a bit dodgy.

LordEmsworth · 14/08/2022 19:02

Well you need to give the address where you are currently living, and change it every time you move. Not lie and say you are living somewhere where it's more convenient for you to receive mail. I am not wise but I do know how to use Google:

You’re not unreasonable to say that you need an address for your driving licence.

How you choose to live your life is up to you, but I wouldn’t be comfortable living off the goodwill of other people just because I resented the idea of renting accommodation for myself.

Mamamia7962 · 14/08/2022 19:03

You cannot use a PO box for a driving licence it has to be an address where you can be contacted at all times.

NellesVilla · 14/08/2022 19:04

No, not possible, @LittleBearPad

And what do you mean, @toffeechai ? Do you mean I should pay a fortune to rent a flat alone? But then I’d have to claim some sort of benefit and I probably wouldn’t get anything considering I’m single, childfree and not priority.

I’m not living off anyone! I’m often a caretaker for properties and live on site/Airbnbs etc etc.

To be clear, my car is not with me much as I walk to work/use public transport most of the time.

Well if you're a caretaker and live on site then that is your address.

Mamamia7962 · 14/08/2022 19:08

Seems a waste of time paying for a car if you don't use it.

LittleBearPad · 14/08/2022 19:08

It likely to be horrifically long winded but maybe call the DVLA and ask them. If, as I assume, you’re ‘house-sitting’ for security purposes there may be something they can suggest. Essentially they need to be able to get hold of you - there may be a solution they can suggest.

NellesVilla · 14/08/2022 19:08

Thanks; I was thinking ahead to next year and to get it sorted with plenty of time. Also applying for new passport.

You need a perament residential address. and to change it every time you move. OR a postal address. Your insurance is a bigger issue to be honest.
