Severe PMS -PMDD not sure which medication to take

I have mild anxiety but since coming off the contraceptive pill 6 months ago and changing to a copper coil for 10 days before my period the anxiety is so bad it’s stops me working.

my doctor has prescribed sertraline and the contraceptive pill. She said to start one or the other, or both, she left the decision up to me. But I dont know what to do!

i am due to have to coil removed in a months time so maybe should try the pill first and then add in the sertraline later? I’m a bit worried about starting both at the same time.

has anyone had any experience of this?

I have pmdd
I'd try the pill first and see, as it will be easier to come off - there are a couple licensed for PMDD - helloclue.com/articles/sex/does-birth-control-help-with-pms-or-pmdd-or-make-it-worse#:~:text=Out%20of%20all%20of%20the,for%20improving%20PMS%20%2F%20PMDD%20symptoms.
How is she suggesting you take the antidepressant? Sometimes they just advise taking a lower dose for 2 weeks before your period...

She suggests taking it every day as I am quiet anxious anyway, always have been. But it’s become out of control since stopping the pill but life has also been very stressful lately for me in my personal life. I’ve heard people say sertraline is a life saver for anxiety so want to try it. But maybe I should start the pill first so I can give each one a go?

I’ve been prescribed marvelon pill, I have read that Yasmin is the only approved pill for Pmdd though?

i only came off the pill as it ruined my sex drive but now have extreme pms so I guess I would rather have the low sex drive.

There is some evidence that calcium supplements can help with PMDD:

I have PMDD.

Dont touch the pill unless it's for contraception.

Adding hormones to haywire hormones is pointless.

I take a low level does to escitalopram and it's excellent. I take 10mg which is the equivalent of 50mg of sertraline.

*dose of.

I hate that Apple change my perfectly normal English to wrong words.

When will they fix that??

Tiredmummy1990 · 14/08/2022 17:15

I’ve been prescribed 50mg sertraline.

i will need some type of contraception after I get the copper coil removed.

im so confused as I’m worried of making things worse.

I have PMDD, for which I’ve been taking 40mg daily of fluoxetine for 3years now, it isn’t really used to help control anxiety (which isn’t a symptom for me). I would completely reiterate the pp who said don’t mix the pill with haywire hormones. Give the stertraline a good few weeks and see how you feel. Don’t be discouraged if you feel awful - it’ll take a few weeks to kick in.

This is bad advice

A potential cause of pmdd is hormonal fluctuations, the pill stops ovulation and stabilises the hormone levels so it helps some people

The extreme pms has only been a problem since I changed from the combined pill to the copper coil.

ive always suffered from what I believe to be anxiety though.

Can you not go back on the pill you were on previously?

Tiredmummy1990 · 14/08/2022 19:13

The previous pill gave me low mood and low sex drive. I also tried mini pill but that made me in tears everyday.
