To panic about people spitting when a dog is around

So - as in the thread title. I was at a BBQ today and the host’s dog was there. There were lots of fruit flies with the heat and someone mentioned that they had spat on the grass/ground as apparently a fly was in their mouth or about to go in their mouth or something. The dog was inside at the time I presume as he was in all morning with the heat, but came out around 20 minutes
later. He was sniffing around as dogs do.

I felt weird about the fact that someone had spat where the dog could easily have sniffed it or licked it. Nobody else was bothered at all including the owner and all laughed when the person mentioned they had spat due to annoyance of the fly. Wondering AIBU in people’s
opinion. I get very anxious about hygiene etc. And I know dog’s get into lots of germs things. But maybe it’s because they’re a different species or something- I just worried about him sniffing it! So AIBU to feel like that about a dog and human saliva? Would you think anything if it was your dog?

I don't understand how you can have such a bad germ anxiety but have a dog. They literally lick their own arseholes.

bellac11 · 14/08/2022 14:12

If you get a fly in your mouth you have to spit it out, you cant pick it out of your mouth, theres no other way of getting it out.

The OP doesn't have a dog. The host of the BBQ has a dog.

It would be the end of the friendship if someone spat in my garden.

So would you expect friend to swallow the fly then instead of spitting it out??

hangrylady · 14/08/2022 14:27

Some dogs eat actual shit

Ever heard of tissues? Would have been around given it was a BBQ.

Sorry, not in my garden.

PatientlyWaiting21 · 14/08/2022 14:44

My dog rolled in shit last week. Sniffing spit is the least of my worries

BeanieTeen · 14/08/2022 14:47

This is the most bizarre things I’ve read in a long time.
Dogs literally sniff for each other’s piss when their out and about on a walk.
Dogs also love to role in fox and badger shit from time to time if they can find some.
A bit of human saliva would be the least of my worries.
If someone had bitten off a piece of meat from the BBQ and then given some to the dog would you have been worried about the saliva traces on that?

Allthecoloursoftherainbow · 14/08/2022 14:50

I'd be more concerned about an adult human who thinks it's ok to spit on the ground at a party (or at all!)

Easy enough to spit into a tissue and dispose

saltwaterandsuncream · 14/08/2022 15:50

What happens when they've swallowed the spider / bird / cat / dog / horse?

bellac11 · 14/08/2022 15:53

If you didnt have a tissue to hand instantly, I personally wouldnt faff about trying to get one, you wouldnt be able to say to someone 'can I have a tissue' while you're trying to get the fly out your mouth, you just need it out.

Ridiculously dramatic Confused

EmmaGrundyForPM · 14/08/2022 16:42

My dog eats rabbit poo almost every day. It's the favourite part of his walk!

OP, if you are this concerned about germs, have you thought about therapy?

Cas112 · 14/08/2022 16:53

Dogs lick there arse and balls, roll around in fox shit and your bothered about someone's spit 😂

LubaLuca · 14/08/2022 17:39

Spitting a fly out of your mouth is not disgusting, and they probably aimed away from any part that people would be likely to step on. I bet that dog's been leaving deposits on every available square inch of garden though, so a bit of saliva is not the biggest thing to worry about here.

Gingefringe · 14/08/2022 17:54

My dog loved eating shit of any kind. I also saw him devour a used condom so I assume there would have been some human bodily fluids in that (eek!) He lived until he was nearly 14.

allboysherebutme · 14/08/2022 18:01

Spitting of any sort makes my blood boil, carry tissues, the fact we have Covid make spitting even worse for me, it infuriated me before but now my head could explode.
When I see joggers spitting on the floor in the morning at the park, I literally want to scream use a bloody tissue and trip them up. 🤬

Spidey66 · 14/08/2022 18:14

With all respect, and I honestly mean this kindly, but if your anxiety about germs is this bad, a dog really isn’t a good pet to have.

and the host’s dog was there.

It's literally on the first line of the OP's very first post.
And actually you sound rather patronising.

OP said a fly was either in our about to enter this person's mouth.
It's an instinct for us to spit something like that out.
However, if you end up with a glob of phlegm on the ground, in this situation (BBQ) I'd scoop up and dispose of.

Sorry you feel like this ,maybe time to get some help managing this anxiety
