My Dad is tight with money

Just need a rant about my Dad, he is in poor health but he is quite tight with money so instead of getting people in to renovate the house or fix pit ina new appliance, he will insist on doing it himself with my Mum and myself assisting him with holding and passing things.

I live at home and am in my 20's, if I don't want to help him with things like this to be honest. Is it time to look to live elsewhere?

Sounds normal to me. Trades people are very expensive.

BMW6 · 13/08/2022 18:49

Perhaps he's conserving cash for your inheritance 🙄

BMW6 · 13/08/2022 18:50

Oh and meant to ask - how much do you pay for your board and lodging?

TheStarsDontShine · 13/08/2022 18:53

Seems normal, surely if you live there it's not to much to ask for help with things? Do you pay your fair share of bills?

Most people don't get tradespeople in for things that can done by themselves

shiningstar2 · 13/08/2022 18:58

If you are in your 20s it might be that you have reached the time you want to leave home anyway. Be aware though that it is likely going to be very much more expensive so best to plan properly. If you haven't started saving now's the time op. 😀

5zeds · 13/08/2022 19:00

Do you know how much it costs for you all to live there?

RaininSummer · 13/08/2022 19:13

You live there too so suck it up and help. Or move out

What a cheeky question!!! 😮

MakeItRain · 13/08/2022 21:58

I would be watching and learning so you can do these things yourself when you move out. Once you're paying all the bills you're more aware of the cost of everything, and being able to plumb in appliances is a really useful skill.

butterfliedtwo · 15/11/2022 20:36

If you live there you help out. Normal. Do you even know whether they have the money to hire people? It is expensive.

AutumnCrow · 16/11/2022 21:57

F (since August obvs). My doesn’t time fly.

Activelyannoyed · 16/11/2022 22:00

Do you contribute financially, does it help also cover the cost of maintenance?

are are you not able to afford a place of your own but actually judgey of how people who can manage theirs. Nah surely not.

Slimjimtobe · 16/11/2022 22:05

You won’t be just passing items to get stuff fixed if you get your own place 🤣🤣🤣 you will pay or you will actually fix them

luxxlisbon · 16/11/2022 22:06

So let me guess, you aren’t paying rent to life there but it’s not you who is tight?

ComtesseDeSpair · 16/11/2022 22:07

As you still live at home and have presumably never engaged a tradesperson, you probably aren’t aware that they can be expensive.

Is it really such a burden upon your life that you’re asked to hold and pass tools to your own father as he does some DIY to the house you benefit from living in? How often do you really have to “put yourself out”?

AutumnCrow · 16/11/2022 22:09

Well a lot might have happened since August.

upfucked · 16/11/2022 22:09

Maybe you could offer to pay for the trades person.

What does that have to do with anything?

Kattitude · 18/11/2022 20:44

It's all part of being a multiperson household, when you move out I hope you can afford everything you have at home and be able to pay someone to come in and do all those little jobs for you, it's far from cheap! Good luck!
