To think PR is a very easy job?

I’m thinking of applying for a junior PR role in a multi national corporation. AIBU to think there’s not much to the job and I should be able to do it? It’s not exactly rocket science is it? Or is there something I’m missing? I’ve never worked in PR before

It’s easy in the way that babies are easy: they just need milk, nappies and sleep, right? It’s not the tasks that are difficult. It’s that you’re expected to do a million of them, very fast, for not great pay, and shit hours, and lots of overtime and early mornings and evenings and whoops no lunch because one client wants a meeting at 12 and another at 1 and another at 2, then the 12 o’clock client calls wanting to know whether the thing agreed is done yet, and so on and so forth.

Peanut9904 · 13/08/2022 17:18

Is it digital PR or a more traditional role?

Lifeismagic · 13/08/2022 17:19

Is there anyone on here who works in PR who would be able to message me please on here? I just have a few questions about the job and industry, no worries if not, thank you

It’s a more traditional PR role but involves some Digital PR

It is in-house not agency

I've been a PR Manager for a company. It was a very sought after job with graduates having done English Lit / History type subjects, internships etc.

It's a lot of writing. Creating stories. Understanding your industry very well so you can jump on opportunities and hijack news. Understanding how to navigate social media. You need to be able to take criticism as people will have a lot of opinions about your writing.

Finally I'd say it's hugely dependent on your industry, I worked in tech which is so different to a consumer product.

I wouldn't say it's easy or hard. It depends on your skill set and the company.

Peanut9904 · 13/08/2022 17:21

So you’ll need to demonstrate an understanding of how to measure campaigns and also potentially how to write for online possibly.

girlmom21 · 13/08/2022 17:21

If you're looking for jobs based on how easy they look you don't deserve them.

Given that you've insulted those who could have helped you so much by saying their job is easy in your opening post, may I (autocorrected to MauiGrin), suggest that perhaps your relationship building and persuasive skills aren't quite as good as you think they are.

Ok, is it possible to learn this on the job or should I be doing a course or maybe a qualification in PR first?

You've got brass op, I'll give you that!

Echobelly · 13/08/2022 17:23

I think it depends on who your clients are. It can be stressful and demand availability at all hours.

tootiredforanything · 13/08/2022 17:23

I think your first few posts are a wind up!

Either that or you are full of yourself!

Lifeismagic · 13/08/2022 17:23

Ok maybe saying I think the job is very easy wasn’t the best choice, I was just sort of trying to ask if it’s possible to learn on the job but I appreciate I didn’t make that clear and didn’t use the right wording in my OP

If you are 29 what has been your work experience to date? What have you done?

GrimDamnFanjo · 13/08/2022 17:25

Seriously at 29 you will struggle to get even a junior role in-house without any experience to demonstrate at interview.
If you are serious about getting into PR then decide what type of PR you want to do and get some relevant experience.

Mainly just worked in shops and hospitality to be honest

Have you got a degree? You will be competing with a lot of grads who won’t just be looking for an easy job. You could look on Moz for beginner SEO guides or similar.

Lifeismagic · 13/08/2022 17:27

Genuine question, is it true that PR’s sometimes trade stories with journalists to avoid negative stories being ran about their business?

Lifeismagic · 13/08/2022 17:05

I’ve researched the role and the business concerned

And yet you posted this thread?!

girlmom21 · 13/08/2022 17:28

So you have no relevant experience and no relevant education and no idea of what the job entails? What made you settle on this one?

BryceQuinlanTheFirst · 13/08/2022 17:28

Have you got a degree? Maybe just my experience but every tech company I've worked at wouldn't hire without a degree and you had to complete writing exercises as part of the interview.

I have a degree in Travel and Tourism. That was why I went for a PR job in Travel

No, PR is not a very easy job. It requires strategic thinking, creativity, and strong writing skills. Regard: finalcamping
