A fucking FIREPIT on a day like this?

I am usually very live and let live with our back neighbours (adjoining gardens). We both have trampolines and dogs so put up with each other’s noise.

But I do think a fire pit in the middle of the day takes the piss a bit. We’ve just had to bring the washing in and we’re torn between a house that smells of fire or closing all the windows and doors and losing the through breeze which is the only thing keeping me from melting into the sofa right now.

I can’t understand the logic of it. Weirdos. A BBQ I could understand and shrug off but this just seems so odd and antisocial. It’s 33 degrees here right now.

YANBU I can’t think of anything worse!

EmmaH2022 · 13/08/2022 13:56

Wtf

Are they planning to burn stuff?

One of the fires that wrecked 8 houses was caused by a chiminea I think.

MoodyTwo · 13/08/2022 13:58

God my lawn would go up in flames with so much of a sniff from a fire pit ...YANBU

For · 13/08/2022 14:01

Yanbu. We’re in a climate change induced heatwave - again - it’s difficult enough trying to reduce carbon in the atmosphere without people just burning wood for fun.

What idiots.

Wombat27A · 13/08/2022 14:03

I used to have b'stard neighbours, who ran a coal fire all day, everyday. Only respite was when they fucked off on holiday for a week in the summer.

We were in the plume of fumes & had to shut our windows, even on hot days.

Moved to a modern bungalow with no nearby chimneys & new b'stard neighbours had a chimney stack built & a woodburner installed...

Not strictly relevant here, the anecdote ^ but recreational fireburning is just antisocial. Plus terrible for copd & asthma people...

However, given the current fire risk, this is monumentally stupid.

lanthanum · 13/08/2022 14:07

Give their phone number to the local fire brigade - if they get a moment between call-outs they might have a word.

MyNameIsAngelicaSchuyler · 13/08/2022 14:07

That’s absolutely crazy and a risk to life. They must be completely dim.

Hotchox · 13/08/2022 14:10

Yeah, that's nuts, getting a fire going when it's as hot and bone dry as it currently is, you're not being unreasonable

One tip though, your open windows means the breeze is blowing hot air into your house; you're better off with windows and curtains closed while it's hotter outside than you want it inside. Leave as many windows as you safely can open over night, close doors, windows and curtains when it heats up again tomorrow. Also, if you have a loft, open up the hatches in the evening so the heat has somewhere to go. (obviously your house may behave differently to ours!)

heyitsthistle · 13/08/2022 14:10

I think there's a firestoppers number you can call. Our county has one. It's more for warning the local fire service about a potential fire, but given how dry it is I'd call them in a heartbeat. There are so many fires around at the moment.

SpinCityBlues · 13/08/2022 14:13

They are idiots.

GiltEdges · 13/08/2022 14:16

I mean yes, your neighbours are nuts. But if it’s 33 degrees then you’re far better off keeping your doors and windows closed and should ideally have done so as soon as the temperature started to rise mid morning, along with closing the curtains.

TimeAtTheBar · 13/08/2022 14:21

I take your points about windows shut (they are upstairs) but with all the back doors and front windows open downstairs there’s a lovely refreshing breeze here that’s cooling me down a treat.

I’ve looked from upstairs and they appear to be smoking meat ok the burner. Fuck’s actual sake.

My knobhead neighbours lit theirs at 8pm, just as the sun had moved away from our windows and I was trying to get the baby to sleep 👍 it was hot as fuck. No idea why they needed an additional fire to blow smoke into every neighbours’ window. Twats.

SwelegantParty · 13/08/2022 14:24

Call the fire service, they can decide whether it's a risk or not. Some idiots round here had lit a fire in a fire pit they have built in the woods last night, a quick call to 999 and it was out within ten minutes.

MarshaBradyo · 13/08/2022 14:26

Massive fire hazard, especially if dry grass around it

Pipsquiggle · 13/08/2022 14:27

I can't believe there are 9% of people who are saying YABU.

Not only is it fucking stupid but totally irresponsible - it would only take 1 spark for the garden to go up. Dickheads.

KangarooKenny · 13/08/2022 14:32

Some fire pits are also BBQ’s.

Goldbar · 13/08/2022 14:39

I would be very worried actually. Is it near grass? Everything is so dry atm it would only take a spark and a fire could spread very quickly.

Sapphirensteel · 13/08/2022 14:46

Bloody stupid in weather like this, only takes a spark on tinder dry fencing or even grass. I know it’s not a deliberate fire ( yet) but there’s info here www.ddfire.gov.uk/firestoppers

antwacky · 13/08/2022 15:19

I feel your pain, my neighbour has been lighting his of an evening. I have been keeping all windows and curtains closed all day until about 8pm then opened them all to get a nice cooling draught through the place only for him to light his fire pit. We have had no rain since June and are surrounded by lots of fields and wooden fences, everything is tinder dry here. On the two hottest nights on record he had one going until 2/3 am. The street outside was rancid with smoke, it was unbearable.

ElCaMum · 13/08/2022 15:26

In other countries that have become accustomed to the heat the UK are having, have fire bans (no natural fire, just gas powered fire pits and bbqs) as this is a massive issue in high heats. That would be my greater concern then annoying smoke.
But equally YANBU.

Slowandwobbly · 13/08/2022 15:34

YADNBU

Also what is the point of BBQs in hot weather either at home ir when you are away.

Why oh why do people go to the beach and think, "hey let's get the disposable BBQ going".

It's madness then and even more so in a drought with the risk of fires spreading.
