To be annoyed at Tesco meal deal sandwiches?

New to mumsnet so if I get things wrong in this post please excuse me.

Anyway, the other day I got myself and the DC a tesco meal deal for lunch.

I had to get back to doing some jobs so I left the DC to finish their sandwiches.

I came back to check on them about 20 minutes later and found torn paper from the sandwich wrapper all over the kitchen table.

I asked DC1 what on earth was going on and they explained to me that they had to peel off the plastic to recycle the card. 🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️

We cleaned up the card in the end and recycled it but AIBU to think that working, busy people aren't going to go to that much effort to recycle some paper?

Went back to tesco today to get some more and they claim to be fully recyclable on the packaging.

Yeah right! Obviously I'm still going to use them so just a rant really.

Meal deals are a waste of money unless you have no option at all.
Make a healthier lunch at home and save money.

You were brave posting in AIBU as a new poster, @Sweetforthesummer
Don't take it to heart. AIBU isn't for the fainthearted. I made the same mistake years ago, been ripped to bits more than once, been through many name changes, but don't post here much any more now that my DC are well into their teens.

Keep coming back to MN, it's entertaining, and always interesting.

I have experienced the same problem. Tesco sandwich packs say the card is recyclable but the entire inside surface of the carton is laminated/bonded with plastic (not just the window like you get on envelopes).
I tried to pull the 2 materials apart but it is virtually impossible.
I wonder if the carton is really recylable in the real world rubbish collection or if it just gets sent to the southern hemisphere to be dumped on the ground and blown into the sea?
Anyone on here work for Tesco and care to comment/explain?

You have too much time on your hands if this is an issue

PenelopeGarseeya · 13/08/2022 15:28

OP it’s a pain on the bum (I also thought you couldn’t recycle food packaging that had direct contact with food like these or a pizza box) ignore the arseholes on here. Just feel content that you’ve done a brilliant job with your DC making them future eco warriors and that extra time is worth it. Id usually have a pasta pot in a meal deal so much easier, but I know sometimes inly a sarnie will do!!

I don't think I'll be posting on mumsnet for long! A lot of you seem very miserable

This is what I thought when I first joined.... Then I became one of them Grin

WhimsicalGubbins · 13/08/2022 15:43

Well!! Now I’m mortified, because I didn’t even realise you had to remove the plastic from envelopes. I pride myself on being pretty eco friendly, I reuse and recycle everything possible, I turn off unnecessary appliances, I make and refill rather than purchase where possible and I never throw clothes in the bin.

But I genuinely had no idea the plastic envelope window needed to removed. I naively thought that because it was so thin and small it could safely be melted during the recycling process. 🤦🏻‍♀️

WhimsicalGubbins · 13/08/2022 15:47

Oh, and as for the nasty replies-ignore them. Those folk are in the minority and will literally jump on any post at all to shower condescension, put downs and negativity. I posted a very lighthearted thread once and got some truly nasty replies. Laugh them off and don’t give them the attention they crave

Bin or burn in this house

Wombat100 · 13/08/2022 16:10

I just rip the plastic bit out as best I can so that the cardboard is separate. It literally take 10 seconds so even most busy people can manage that. I don’t think I could get too worked up over it to be honest.

As for Tesco - they probably don’t care enough to change it unfortunately x

Some real bullies on here

Wouldn’t it be easyer if there were a new law were factories can only use 1 type of material for packaging 😀
