Kidney infection

Hi everyone. Not an AIBU, shamelessly posting for traffic!

I spent the day in A&E yesterday after being sent there by my GP. Turns out I have a kidney infection. I was given antibiotics and anti sickness through a drip, then sent home with co-amoxiclav to take 3 times a day for a week. What I will add to this post which I didn't include in General health, was that I was on plastic chairs for 8 hours, some of which was in a corridor. The poor staff are run off their feet. Sad

I've never had a kidney infection before, so I'm wondering if anyone can share their experiences of recovery. I've got two small
DDs (age 4 and 18 months) which makes resting tricky, but luckily they are in nursery today and on Monday. The pain in my back is horrible, and every time I try and eat, I feel sick. I'm wondering now whether I should have asked for some anti sickness medication to take at home, or if this is just a normal part of the infection that I have to ride out. Any comments of experiences with this are very welcome. Thank you!

I had a v bad kidney infection a few years ago, ignored symptoms as was in middle of very busy job (self employed) and thought it was just uti and would get antibiotics when I had a moment. A short while later I had to go to A&E and long saga ensued. I am now very up on kidney health! Drink lots of clear fluids (watery - tea and coffee etc don't count) - you should drink at least 3 litres a day even when the infection is gone. I didn't feel sick as far as I remember but did feel quite ill. I think you should go to A and E again if sickness doesn't subside soon.
I imagine the antibiotics will start to have an effect in a couple of days but if worried at all before, definitely go back to a and e. Delay did actually cost me my kidney as it never recovered function. Luckily the one I have left is normal and I look after it properly now! The urology docs have told me to bypass gp and always go direct to a and e if I ever have any kidney pain or suspect infection/obstruction again (possibly cos only one kidney left but I would do that even with 2 good ones after my experience). Did they do a ct?

@mrsjoyfulprizeforraffiawork thank you so much for your reply. Sounds like you really went through it! Good tips re kidney health. I definitely need to up my fluid intake. I can't believe the back pain! I initially thought I'd hurt my back lifting 18 month old DD!

I had a kidney infection years ago. When I first went into A&E, they thought it was appendicitis so removed that. By the time they figured out what it was I'd developed sepsis and spent a couple of days in the ICU. Recovery from the infection was fine - it was the surgery I struggled with. I had to have a few scans afterwards to check everything was ok, which it was. I drink plenty of water now and do everything I can to avoid UTIs as they think that's how it started. Basically if you need a wee, go! And always always go for a wee after sex (assuming you're female that is). On the rare occasion I have had a UTI it's in my notes that I need 7 days antibiotics asap and that usually clears it up. 14 years later and I have no repercussions from it at all. I remember the back pain though, so I hope that goes for you soon! Definitely finish the course of antibiotics even if you feel better and you've still got some left.
