As in, “I spelled/spelt it wrong”?

YABU - spelled
YANBU - spelt

As I said, I don't think they are interchangeable. Nor do I think spelled and spelt are interchangeable.

Like discreet and discrete. Different spellings because different meanings...

Willyoujustbequiet · 12/08/2022 10:04

Spelt is British and spelled American.

Passed and past have different meanings.

BadNomad · 12/08/2022 11:01

I use both depending on how I would say it.

In the email they spelled it ABC.
But I think it's spelt XYZ.

I'm not sure why. I think maybe I subconsciously associate -ed with past tense.

I burned the toast
The toast is burnt

Hmm

Learned and learnt is another one I get confused with.

Thatswhyimacat · 12/08/2022 11:09

As PPs have said, spelled is traditionally American and spelt British.

I did some copy editing on the side once upon a time and one American author refused to deal with me after I corrected his work to British English as asked, as he would not accept that 'spelt' was a word and that I was an idiot. I replied to apologise that I spelt spelled incorrectly.

SpiderVersed · 12/08/2022 11:10

Spelt, burnt, learnt just feel nicer.

I know both are acceptable, but I prefer the T to the ED.

It's different tenses:

Simple past: I ate , I read, I spelt , I rode

Past perfect: I had eaten, I had read, I had spelled , I had ridden

Exactly this

I learnt
I had learned

I drank
I had drunk

I swam
I had swum

I was
I had been

Everyone saying "English is ridiculous" pretty much every European language has these distinctions and even more complexity.

I think it's because English verb conjunctions are quite similar sounding in most cases we aren't used to differences. But no one is confused between "I was" and "I had been" for that reason. "I been" definitely sounds wrong in the way that "I spelt" doesn't.

Slightlystressedbride · 12/08/2022 12:00

*"I spelled" doesn’t sound wrong hahahaha proving my own point!!
