To get help for my baby's toenail?

Since she was born, one of DD's toenails has been malformed. It's like a ball rather than a nail. I haven't ever been able to cut it (she's 12mo) and it's just getting thicker and bigger.

HV has gone awol and I keep being told the duty HV will call me but nothing. Baby drop in is closed.

Friends have told me I shouldn't bother the GP with this but I'm not getting anywhere.

AIBU to ask what this is and what I can do?

Mine are like that... Just cut it carefully.

luxxlisbon · 11/08/2022 20:59

Get help from who?
You just need to get better about clipping her nails.

SlagathaChristie · 11/08/2022 21:00

I'd go to the GP or a podiatrist perhaps. If you cannot cut it, it won't be comfortable in shoes as she walks more and I would imagine could cause issues.

Sunnyqueen · 11/08/2022 21:01

It looks like it could be cut down? One of mine had an ingrown toenail as a baby. The gp wouldn't treat it because he said the only treatment was to remove the whole nail and it wouldnt be right to do it to a baby 🤷‍♀️

MassiveSalad22 · 11/08/2022 21:01

Mine are like that. Don’t think anything needs to be done.

MassiveSalad22 · 11/08/2022 21:01

Other than cut it obviously, it’s very long

POTC · 11/08/2022 21:01

It's just growing thicker and bigger because it hasn't been cut, I'd be cutting it before going to a gp, find a chiropodist if you're not confident doing it yourself.

quitefranklyabsurd · 11/08/2022 21:01

You need a really decent set of nail clippers and probably someone to hold her leg still.

ohidoliketobe · 11/08/2022 21:01

All my DCs have been like that until they were about 3. I filled them to keep them decent length and didn't given it much thought tbh. Seemed to just grow out eventually

FannyFifer · 11/08/2022 21:05

I've got weird toenails on that toe as well, it just grows kinda up the way, you just need to use clippers on it.
It's not something you need a Dr or advice about I wouldn't think.

georgarina · 11/08/2022 21:06

You can't see from the picture but it's very thick - too thick to cut. It looks like a ball.

Obviously I've cut her other nails so it's not just that I don't cut her nails.

Thanks. This is what I've been worried about. It's thicker than it looks in the picture, there's literally no way to cut it. I think I'll have to get an opinion.

Mine are like that. I use a wide clipper. Dog nail clippers would work too, or file them down

GetOffTheRoof · 11/08/2022 21:10

You'd do better to take her to a chiropodist to discuss it and how best to manage it.

I have the same on both my little nails. I just clip it with nail scissors / nail clippers / cuticle snippers and then file it flat so it looks more normal.

Arthursmom · 11/08/2022 21:12

You cut it top down. My son is the same.

Jammysod · 11/08/2022 21:13

One of my little toe nails is like that. I stubbed my toe & ripped the nail off, grew back like that (assume the nail bed is damaged). It's not painful though.
You just need a really sturdy pair of nail clippers to get through it.

Plinkyplankyplonk · 11/08/2022 21:16

File it down so its a bit thinner and then cut?

SilverGlassHare · 11/08/2022 21:16

Take her to a chiropodist or just get some strong nail clippers.

Footbal · 11/08/2022 21:17

Just cut it

Something like this

giftswap2021 · 11/08/2022 21:19

Could you get an electric nail file for babies and use that to file away the thicker part until it gets manageable to cut with clippers? Something like this?

Of course it's not too thick to cut-down be daft, file it if you feel more confident doing so.

bbqhulahoop · 11/08/2022 21:22

My little toe nails are like this. I use dog clippers on them. Not very ladylike but needs must. I'm not sure what a gp could do? If you so want an expert I'd go to a chiropodist rather than a doctor

FabFitFifties · 11/08/2022 21:26

See your GP - your HV will direct you there anyway. Ignore those saying don't bother the GP. I can see why you would be concerned re comfort once in shoes.

It doesn't need a GP. Just cut it!!! A number of people have shared how they deal with theirs and none of it is 'visit the GP'
