Neighbour pouring used cat litter down the drain

A neighbour on my street has got into the habit of carrying their litter tray onto the public path and pouring the litter into the drain. It's one of those open drains with the grating across it iyswim.

Not only the fact that they spill it everywhere and make no attempt to clear it up I'm worried that they are gong to block the drains. We've had regular problems in the past with drains being blocked and having to call out the water service, who always confirm it's from people putting wipes and nappies down there!

AIBU to say something? Or is this actually a normal thing to do and, as a non cat owner, I just don't realise it?

Absolutely not normal, why can't they just put it in the bin like everyone else? Especially if it's clumping litter which will probably just make a big clog.

gamerchick · 11/08/2022 17:26

Erm I'd be on the phone to the council. It's unacceptable to do that.

Aquamarine1029 · 11/08/2022 17:27

I would report her to every agency that will listen.

Alphabet1spaghetti2 · 11/08/2022 17:29

Totally not normal - report as pp have said.
Even so called flushable litter should be bagged and binned.

StoneofDestiny · 11/08/2022 19:33

Report to council, environmental health, water board and to anybody else who has an input.

Cat owner here not normal at all.
I'll rinse the litter tray out using outside tap after I've cleaned it out to get rid of the last few bits but no it goes in the bin.

BabyDreamers · 11/08/2022 20:16

Cat owner here. Definitely goes in the bin. Never heard of anyone doing that before. It's going to clog up.

Drain grates in the road should only be for rainwater. Ignoring all the blockage issues these drains go directly to your nearest stream or river, and that really won’t thank her for all that crap, especially with water levels so low at the moment.

Environment Agency, water company or council are your best bets.

Northernsoullover · 11/08/2022 20:23

Water company is your best bet. Environmental Health don't deal with drainage.

BMW6 · 11/08/2022 20:35

Why not go to her next time you see her about to do it and explain about the drain blockages. Tell her she must not put anything down there except water. You can do it in a friendly way.

If she tells you to MYOB or is rude, or continues to use the drain I'd report her to Environmental Health.

This is exactly what I was going to post. Those drains don't go to any treatment works, they outflow straight to rivers/the sea. Your neighbour is an environmental menace. Please report her to the council with evidence if possible.

bellac11 · 11/08/2022 20:38

It might be the flushable type but then it needs to be flushed rather than put down the main drains

TwoMonthsOff · 11/08/2022 20:39

Report to your Water Authority maybe and the council ?

worriedniece · 11/08/2022 20:40

Take a photo for evidence too
