To skip boiler service this year?

Sorry for the boring thread!

Money is really tight at the moment (as it is for many). We usually get our 20-year-old boiler serviced every September and I'm tempted to skip it this year and save the £60.

Most importantly, we have got a carbon monoxide alarm so if there was a dangerous leak we should know about it.

The other thing is of course keeping the boiler running. When we've had it serviced before (by several different tradespeople) they haven't really done anything, just had a look and done some checks. I'm not convinced that it's ever helped prolong the life of the boiler.

If you are a bit more clued up about these things than I am, would you skip it? Or does it really make a difference?

Please do not skip getting your boiler serviced, there are better ways of saving pennies! Cancel the tv license, Netflix, review your food shop, petrol etc etc.

Reason I say this is it's a safety issue, that annual service can spot potentially fatal or future £££ issues that could be sorted now.

My DF is a gas engineer. My boiler is only 2 years old. Yet I still pay to get it serviced - I pay as it keeps the warranty valid, I request the firm sends my DF as the engineer :-) regardless it's hugely important to at the very least get it fully checked annually.

Check out reviews for a reputable firm, you'll find some firms are currently offering summer service rates too.

We had a new boiler fitted about 7 years ago by a local independent heating engineer (at less than half what BG quoted). Same guy has serviced it every winter too. We've only ever had to call him out once for reasons other than a service. He was all like 'Ah Mrs Ibiza, as one of my regulars, I'll be right there'. He was too. I'd get it serviced to keep up a relationship with the service engineer if nothing else.
