Dogs in cars - Why do people STILL do this?

WildFlowerBees · 11/08/2022 14:41

Again today the police broke into a car to rescue a dog who'd been left in the car no windows open.

Are people really so stupid that they are unaware of how dangerous not to mention bloody cruel this is?

Year upon year there's social media and news information on this very topic yet every year some cruel twat locks their dog in a car.

Some people really don't deserve to have an animal.

saw that on the news this morning. They broke the window to get the dog out. Dont understand it. Perhaps any owner doing this should be locked in the car for a while to see how it feels?

WildFlowerBees · 11/08/2022 17:47

They should have their dog removed and prevented from owning anymore. Also people walking their dogs in the midday heat. It's worrying just how ignorant some people are.

There was a thread on here a few days ago and some idiot was saying it was unreasonable for someone to call the police / break a window unless they’d waited at least 10 minutes . Unfortunately there is always someone who thinks they know better and it’s always the animal that suffers .

It's because some people are born without any common sense. That's why you see instructions on strawberry shampoo advising that it's not food and shouldn't be consumed for example. See also - warning on a paint stripping tool advising the user not to dry their hair with it.

Is it lack of common sense or just not giving a shit?

x2boys · 11/08/2022 18:45

People are very thick my poor dog has been wandering around all day feeling very sorry for herself just looking for cool places to lie down .

Creepymanonagoatfarm · 11/08/2022 18:48

Maybe a judge should order they be locked in a car for the same time?
Wearing a fur coat.

Topseyt123 · 11/08/2022 18:51

They are very thick and they have absolutely no common sense at all.

Yes, I agree, they should be banned from keeping animals. They are too dim.

REP22 · 11/08/2022 19:04

I used to work in an emergency out-of-hours vet practice. It was staggering the number of serious injuries and illnesses that had been caused to pets solely by human stupidity and ignorance. And most of them had kids with them. Awful.

I agree that the pets should be moved and a lifetime ban on keeping animals to follow. A part of me also thinks "name and shame in the local press" too, but maybe that's taking it too far.

It's heartbreaking to hear about the cases though. It's a horrible, horrible way to die. And in most cases, bar a few, of the ones I've had direct experience of, the owner(s) on returning to find their vehicle open and their pet being revived or recovering outside have been aggressive and abusive.

I know that vets, animal welfare organisations, the Police, etc. try so hard to publicise the issue and speak up for the animals who have no voice to speak for themselves, but it just defeats me that people still think it's an acceptable thing to do, even for a few minutes.

REP22 · 11/08/2022 19:07

*"pets should be removed", not (just) moved. Sorry.

Changechangychange · 11/08/2022 19:10

It’s stupidity. I got in an argument on a US forum I frequent about somebody who had left their three month old baby in the car while they went to work, nipping out to feed them every few hours.

People were insisting it was safer than leaving the baby at home alone. Um no, for an immobile newborn baby it literally isn’t safer, they can cook in cars in under 30mins, whereas at home you will come home to a dehydrated, hoarse baby with nappy rash, but most likely not dead.

But leaving them alone at home is more likely to attract attention from the neighbours who will see you go to work and hear the baby crying, so selfishly risking your child’s life in a staff car park seems better to the parent.

Aargh, it was a really annoying conversation. Still cross just thinking about it Angry

REP22 · 11/08/2022 19:14

@Changechangychange Was that the AAM site? If so, I read that, and the commentary. You're not wrong.

35965a · 11/08/2022 19:26

Some people are just too stupid and I don’t know how they function in life. They do stupid things and others (in this case their pet) suffers.

Changechangychange · 11/08/2022 19:27

@REP22 Yep. The amount of “oh she might have lost her job otherwise, what else could she do other than put her tiny baby’s life at serious risk” justification was just appalling.

Not from everyone, obviously, but it didn’t feel like many people really clocked how incredibly, incredibly dangerous it was - checking on the baby every two hours did not make it remotely safer, FFS.

And it is such a hideous, gruesome way to die - it’s not normally a site I feel the need to get into arguments on, but I honestly felt there needed to be visible pushback for anyone else reading who was tempted to do the same thing.

Leafy3 · 11/08/2022 19:28

Saw someone walking a chihuahua in a fleece today.
And another small dog in a bonnet.
😡😡

BeanieTeen · 11/08/2022 19:31

I presume they don’t mean to harm their dogs - so it can only be sheer stupidity. And if you’re that stupid I don’t think you should own a dog. Or any pet of any kind.
I don’t see how you need social media and police warnings to work out a car gets hot, even with the window slightly cracked. You literally feel it every time the weather is hot and you open the car door. It’s just so insanely stupid to not understand this. It’s so stupid it hurts.

That's awful and whilst I'm not condoning her actions in the slightest, we do at least get maternity leave in the UK, help ( for some( towards childcare) and we have a welfare state
I'm on various American disbilluty groups ,and I have yo say I'm glad I'm the parents of a disabled child in the UK rather than the US

Changechangychange · 11/08/2022 19:43

@x2boys Agreed, and I can see why she might have felt driven to it, but honestly just call in sick or something. It was an office, not retail, you get sick leave even if it’s unpaid.

MrsMitford3 · 11/08/2022 19:48

A neighbour and I were passing on the high st and stopped to chat in front of a car with 3 panting, frantically barking dogs-teeny crack in window but dogs obviously unhappy. As we were standing there debating calling the police the owner walked up-he was very dismissive and told us we were ridiculous...some ppl never learn!

Minfilia · 11/08/2022 19:51

I mean, this isn’t always the case, but with modern cars you can programme the climate so it stays cool. My car is WONDERFUL for this. It’s lovely to get into a pre air conditioned car in this heat 😊

crosstalk · 11/08/2022 19:55

I don't know why there aren't warning signs up in areas where people might leave dogs in cars - with a note saying if your dog looks as if it might die, police have every right to smash your car window. There must be some record of where these things happen nationally. But people do get very defensive/aggressive - I reported two spaniels in a locked car in distress in a small city. Top of a car park, blazing sun. Police arrived at the same time as owner with two young children. "I was only away half an hour," she said, "the dogs are fine." Hmmm.

Can anyone link to the video a vet made sitting in a locked car in the heat himself with a thermometer. It was brilliant - and made the point as the heat rose rapidly at least he could get out.

crosstalk · 11/08/2022 19:59

@Minfilia Believe it or not, very few of us have cars like that. There's another thread where someone was reluctant to drive 400 miles in the heat and some people said "but don't you have an airconditioned car?" Most of us don't and certainly not one that stays airconditioned without the engine on.

WildFlowerBees · 11/08/2022 20:00

It makes me so angry, I wish there were a system that vets the suitability of people as pet owners. The guy around the corner from me 'walks' his dog around the green opposite, doesn't pick up after it on his phone couldn't give a shit. Poor bloody dog has such a crap life.

I hate people sometimes, if you love animals then take proper care of them!

Oh totally but the idea that you have to either leave your newborn alone at home or in the car is quite barbaric ,just awful
Not arguing with you at all, just sickens me that is the choices some women might be left with .
