Does coving on wall look old fashioned?

Our current home has coving but new build we looked at doesn’t. I’m wondering is coving old fashioned? I really like it and feel the new build looks naked without the bit st the top!

also lots of new homes seem to have wall paper on one wall. Is wall paper in now?

wallpaper feature walls have had their day, in interior design trend terms but lots of people still have them because they like them or they haven’t decorated since they were last ‘in’.

Coving looks great in the right room. The style and proportions have to be right though. It usually doesn’t work in mass developer new builds because the ceilings are already fairly low, so it just draws the eye more and makes them appear lower. The coving used in new builds is also often DIY shop cheap, basic narrow stuff, so just looks naff (not that, wider or decorative coving would work any better, proportionally).

I live in a victorian house and am in the process of reinstating the coving that the previous owners took out. I like it, plus the house is wonky and will help to make the ceilings look straight and get a clean decorating line.

Coving is classic - without it a room feels cheap (IMO)

Wallpaper is in - people are even wallpapering their ceilings now

Ceilings are so hot right now

Just realised haven't really answered your question

I think it's old fashioned but classic.

If you prefer a modern design then you may find this looks dated.

I personally dislike new builds & love a time capsule.

In my new house intend to paint the covings gold & keep my 70s style kitchen so what do I know

The sole reasons they don't put coving up is to save money and to avoid highlighting the fact that the ceilings in new builds are often very low.

Probably partly true.

Certainly I can believe that is isn't fitted to save a bit of money.
I disagree about the ceiling heights in newbuilds though, ours is 8ft4in which is certainly higher than our previous houses (1950's & 1970's).

I think it is often used to cover poor finishing between the wall / ceiling but in our newbuild the lines are all crisp & sharp. As much as I like coving (I fitted it in our last house) I don't think it would add anything in our new home.

We couldn't care less about decorating fashions or whether it looks out of date (too much grey anyone?). If WE like it then it is fine whereas if a visitor doesn't like it then tough, they don't live here!
