We have recently bought a new house and are hosting a bbq for our friends this weekend.

We have never hosted before and our friends have amazing BBQs - always lots of side dishes to choose from.

What's your favourite or what would you recommend?

So far I've got 2 different salads - (tomatoes/ cucumber) & ( leafy one)

Corn on the cob

Mozzarella & tomatoes plate

Fruit grazing board

What can we add? 🤪

Coleslaw and potato salad with lardons

A massive fan of potatoes here. I like baby new potatoes boiled in their skin and left to cool, some home made potato salad (the potatoes are always undercooked in shop bought) and some home made potato salad mixed with whole grain mustard (added a tiny bit at a time until the ratio is right). Also, I love it when the host does onions to go with the food.

If you’re doing a fruit platter, you could melt some chocolate and have some marshmallows and doughnuts to go with it.

My friend has a bar in her back garden and her DH always makes up a couple of slushy style cocktails and they always go down very well.

I love a homemade coleslaw with a BBQ

This was exactly what I came on to say having read the title.

Homemade potato salad!

Baby potatoes chopped in two and boiled in salted water. Drain, leave to cool, add chopped spring onion, garlic, salt, creme fraiche and mayo and a few spoon fulls of cream cheese until it tastes yummy. Garnish with fresh herbs. Yum!

I think most people have already said my favourites. I especially like cous cous but rather than buy a tub from the fudge just get a flavoured one from the dried food aisle. They’re about 50p and make loads - plus are dead easy.

My dad would insist on baked beans with a barbecue but he’s from Essex 😂

In addition to the above mentioned coleslaw and potato salads, you could add a zingy Tabbouleh. I usually do it Nigella-style ‘bejewelled’ with pomegranate seeds!

Bean salad.

My favourite is caprese salad skewers. Little skewers with alternating cherry tomatoes, baby mozzarella balls and basil leaves. Easy to eat and look great!

Miso aubergine - thick slices marinated in miso paste and sesame oil then grilled

Green lentil, roast butternut squash, feta and rocket salad with a lemon vinaigrette

Corn on the cob with chilli and manchego

Cold cabbage and noodles with a peanut dressing

Love this watermelon & feta salad - also really lovely the next day! (I don’t always bother with the balsamic if I don’t have any)
