Christmas buy kids only

With the rising bills, especially energy bills starting to worry about Christmas and how we'll afford it. Would it be unreasonable to say to family we are only buying presents for kids?

Do many people do this already? We mentioned this last year but didn't go down well with BIL who doesn't have kids.

My family have done this for years, our family is huge though so would be ridiculous to get everyone presents. But it's even more relevant with the cost of living reaching crazy levels.

knickersniff · 10/08/2022 17:34

Yep done it for the last 3/4 years . It so much better

CoffeeLover90 · 10/08/2022 17:34

I do and my family did the same. After age 16, it was cards only but me and my sister still got around £50 worth of presents, I know the amount because we're given the money if we can't decide what we want. When my DS was born I stopped buying for adults and only buy for the kids. But I always ask that they do not buy me anything as I'd rather DS have something instead. Christmas is for the kids in my opinion.

PuttingDownRoots · 10/08/2022 17:35

As long as you don't expect BIL to buy for your kids...

Mally100 · 10/08/2022 17:36

Yanbu, a grown adult can go buy gifts for themselves! This is going to be a tough year for many, and those that are not understanding don't deserve gifts.

Lottapianos · 10/08/2022 17:37

We're planning to only buy for my nephew this year (only grandchild in family). We have no kids so we will get nothing, and thats fine

Rowen32 · 10/08/2022 17:38

Of course or don't buy any presents at all if it's too much pressure. Do get something for brother in law though if you expect him to buy presents for your children :-)

Michellebops · 10/08/2022 17:39

We buy only for the kids and the adults with no kids - usually voucher or booze

ClocksGoingBackwards · 10/08/2022 17:39

Its a bit shit for people who don’t have kids if you still expect your children to get a present from them. Either tell them to only get your ex a selection box at most, or get the childless adults a gift from the dc.

WhippedSoap · 10/08/2022 17:39

I guess it has to be kids or child-free adults. It's difficult though, what on earth do you buy your BIL for Christmas?!

My family is like this (only I have DCs) so we started doing a secret Santa for adults. My brothers still moan though. I find it all very stressful.

Presents are the worst part of Christmas. Grown adults who don't need anything stamping their feet and demanding gifts.

We are going on holiday this year and escaping the whole sarga!

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 10/08/2022 17:40

It’s totally fine as long as you don’t expect BIL or anyone else who you aren’t buying for (or aren’t buying for their kids) to buy you or your kids anything.

Wakemeuuuup · 10/08/2022 17:43

That's fine but either buy for BIL or tell him not to buy for the kids

Becles · 10/08/2022 17:44

So you unilaterally decided that people have to buy your children presents, but you're under no obligation to make sure they have something to open.

Great way to ram home that those without children have no place in family considerations. Either say those without children still get a present too or admit that you can't be arsed to think about the ones who aren't worth your time or money.

Exactly this! No idea what to buy him so just getting something for the sake of it which feels a waste of money. And Christmas is about getting together and the kids, not presents when your an adult.

I know he likes to get my DC presents tho!

We buy for the children in the family apart from one BIL who doesn't have children, we buy for him and he buys for our kids (not us though).

Secret Santa is your other option if conversation with BIL didn't help last year. Perhaps if he is also benefiting from smaller amount of gifts to buy then he will be more positive.

Wow! No that's not what I said or think!

I don't buy for my brother or SIL just their children and they do the same. I still buy for my parents or anyone without kids who I would be expecting to get my kids something. I often dress it up as the kids buying the present. I know lots of families this works for, I also know families who do secret Santa for the grown ups so you only buy one gift. It seems very unfair to not buy for a childless adult who will buy for your children.

ConsuelaHammock · 10/08/2022 17:49

Do secret Santa . One for adults and one for children?
