Short interview

AIBU to assume I won’t get this job…

Yesterday I had my fourth interview for a role at a new company. The first three were with one lady, this one with her manager.

It was set up for 30 minutes but lasted 8.

Should I be worried? Do I follow up?

Thanks!

Four interviews. That’s ridiculous. I know it’s becoming so much more common nowadays, but I think it’s a criminal waste of everyone’s time. Maddening.

Anyway, in the light of that I say not necessarily. Perhaps the other person said how much they liked you, and the manager just wanted to check you out quickly to confirm there was nothing standout unhireable about you. And didn’t want to waste any more of your/her time, because you’d already had 3 bloody interviews.

Hang tight! I reckon you’ll get it. Come back and tell us!

MagicMatilda · 10/08/2022 17:31

Thank you for the support. I keep going over it, it was awkward and I think she just didn’t gel with me. Eeekk I hate job hunting.

I think the drawn out process isn’t helping my nerves!

I will definitely let you know. Might be a few more months at this rate 🤣

Yes, such a long process makes it terribly nerve-wracking. And if you don’t get the job after all that, it feels like you’ve invested so much time into it. Job hunting is horrible. I’ve recently been doing it very intensively too, so I feel your pain. Good luck. You only need to get one job!

The interview for my current job lasted 5 minutes. I rang my husband as soon as I left to say that they hated me so much that they terminated the interview after a few questions.

When I got home they called to say there were 'absolutely blown away by my professionalism and experience' and the job was mine if I wanted it, but they were concerned that I was overqualified and too experienced. They suggested that I came in for a morning to shadow the current job-holder to make sure the job was what I expected. It was and I've been there for a few years now.

Good luck!

Oh wow, go you! That’s amazing.

And so good to hear, it gives me some hope! I’m sat here over analysing it all…well all 8 minutes worth.

Four interviews is ridiculous.

what kind of job are you going for that requires so much of your time to be given to them before you’ve even got the job?

Gr33ngr33ngr4ss · 10/08/2022 18:05

Was it over video?

I find they tend to get to the point and over with a bit faster. By the time you've gone in, sat down, been offered coffee etc you're 10 mins in on a f2f. Video needs none of that.

MagicMatilda · 10/08/2022 18:45

Yes, it was a video. All four have been over zoom.

The role is commutations & relationship manager for a company similar to say Disney.

It has been going on for over two months now including personality tests on top.

Whats your feeling on whether you want to work there?

My concern with places that take 4 interviews to hire someone is that it usually points to a company wide reluctance to be responsible for making decisions and taking ownership and can actually be a very irritating work environment to be in

Flyonthewall01 · 10/08/2022 19:20

Four interviews is insane. I recently had a second interview which was scheduled for an hour but was over in 15mins. They asked me three questions and that was it.
They called me that evening to offer me the job and I started three weeks ago! They had already made their decision in my first interview. The second interview was just to get a second opinion from another department head. This may well be the case here!! Don’t lose hope I’m sure you smashed it

HangOnToYourself · 10/08/2022 19:26

If its anything like my organisation the last interview will probably be just a quick check with the manager to.make sure she agrees you are right for the role

WomanStanleyWoman2 · 10/08/2022 20:07

If you’ve already had three interviews, I wouldn’t be surprised if the quick final one was a ‘rubber stamp’ from someone more senior. I’ve had that before.

Good luck!

Whitehorsegirl · 10/08/2022 20:41

Four interviews is ridiculous. I would not work for a companies that does this. It just show they are bad at making decisions and have really bureaucratic and old- fashioned processes. Two interviews is the maximum that I would put myself through for a job.

buckeejit · 10/08/2022 22:36

Oh crikey. I'm glad for you it's over either way. Good luck. As my da would say 'if it's for you, it won't go by you' 💐

bbqhulahoop · 10/08/2022 22:39

@op, I somewhat disagree with the PPs telling you this is ridiculous. I interviewed for 4 jobs before getting hired and two had 5 interviews. It's impossible for us to know if they did an approval check or dismissal in 8 mins. What do you think?

The best but of advice I got in my process was "if the interview process is this hard what will it be like working for them? It served me well 😘

MagicMatilda · 11/08/2022 00:03

Thank you for all the supportive comments!

I think my gut is telling me it will be a no, which is very disappointing as I do really want to get this role and have invested a lot of time and effort into trying to secure it.

I recently had an interview for a competitive role with a six figure salary. The final interview lasted less than 20 minutes and I got the job. I wouldn’t worry at all that the interview being short means you’ll be unsuccessful - it could mean the exact opposite and that you very quickly demonstrated everything they needed to see. Good luck!!

WeAreAllLionesses · 11/08/2022 00:51

I was called for interview with one other person; we were supposed to have equal interview timings but theirs went on WAY longer than expected.

I was sure they'd got it and the interview panel must have loved them but I was hired - apparently they were asking lots of questions of the other candidate hence the time taken.

You never know what they're looking for - good luck!

babyfrenchie · 11/08/2022 01:12

I work in HR and I think they probably loved you and didn't see a need to drag the interview on. Fingers crossed!

MagicMatilda · 11/08/2022 08:20

Ooo on the topic of questions. The whirlwind of it all flustered me and I had no question to ask at the end. Does this show me in a bad light?

Everyone here is so kind, thank you!! My stomach is still in knots. Hoping to hear asap so I can move on either way.

I recently had an interview over Microsoft teams and it was a disaster from my point of view.

When they asked at the end if I had any questions, I laughed and said no because whatever I could say at that point would come out as waffle! Two days later I found out that I was successful. Still going through the application process as I have more bits to do but I passed the interview Smile

MagicMatilda · 15/08/2022 11:43

Well I am still waiting for feedback! They haven’t had a chance to “regroup” yet (eyeroll) On of the off chance I do get offered the job I’ve decided I won’t be accepting. Lesson learnt.

OP posts:
buckeejit · 16/08/2022 14:49

Ah that sucks, they should have made a decision by now. I agree it's disrespectful to leave it so long

Thatiswild · 16/08/2022 14:56

I had a short interview for a job by phone many years ago and my now husband was going for the same job - his ear three times as long so I assumed mine had gone badly. I got the job! Don’t let it sway you, 8 minutes is long enough for them to tell a lot about you. I know it sometimes takes a while to discuss who they want to offer it to aswell, don’t be disheartened.
