to wonder if it’s acceptable to smoke whilst pregnant?

Just seen a heavily pregnant woman in town, smoking away whilst taking a break in her shopping.

Also knew a girl at work who was a frequent visitor to the smoking area to the very end of her pregnancy.

I thought it’s commonly known how harmful smoking is for unborn babies.

Is it due to ignorance or negligence? And why is it socially acceptable, unlike drinking or drug using in pregnancy?

It's an addiction. You can't just stop because someone tells you it's dangerous/bad for your baby.

I am visiting him twice a day, anyway my point is EVERY single time there are heavily pregnant women and visitors smoking outside the entrance.”

That’s what I mean.

So everyone agrees it’s not acceptable, however, it would imply it’s looked down upon by the society. You wouldn’t think so by looking at amount of pregnant women happily smoking away in a busy town centre.

My question is do they not know how harmful it is or they don’t care?

Yes, I’m judging people who knowingly put their children at risk. How dare I 🙄

"My question is do they not know how harmful it is or they don’t care?"

My answer is you'd have to ask them yourself, because how would we know 🙄🙄

HailAdrian · 10/08/2022 17:17

It's fucking disgusting, poison your own body with that shit by all means but why subject your child to it?

Antarcticant · 10/08/2022 17:17

They know and they care, but it's an addiction.

vodkaredbullgirl · 10/08/2022 17:17

Don't get pregnant then, same as if you're abducted to heroin or alcohol.

HailAdrian · 10/08/2022 17:18

Addicted* thank you autocorrect.

nokidshere · 10/08/2022 17:19

It's like everything else. It happens to other people. Like trampolines in the back garden, or swimming in a river when it's hot - accidents only happen to other people.

Unless you have first hand knowledge of things happening in relation to actions people tend to bury their head and say all will be fine.

HailAdrian · 10/08/2022 17:22

I love how mumsnet tries to turn this into a feminist issue. I reckon people here are talking bollocks and would sure as he'll judge a pregnant woman for doing any other drug or drinking heavily, knowing the risks.

Motnight · 10/08/2022 17:22

It's not acceptable.

I've noticed a few pregnant women smoking recently.

gamerchick · 10/08/2022 17:25

Tbh it's bugger all to do with you OP.

Finding the suggestion that SS would be interested quite amusing like.

Sunnyqueen · 10/08/2022 17:25

Yanbu it's definitely wrong and I've stopped smoking from the moment I've found out. That being said all the women I've known who've smoked all the way through, the babies have come out perfectly healthy and good weights 🤷‍♀️

What's wrong with trampolines in the garden??

nokidshere · 10/08/2022 17:28

What's wrong with trampolines in the garden??

Exactly my point.

Clearly nothing as far as you are concerned as you haven't had a child seriously injured on one.

We take risks much more seriously if it's happened to us or someone we know.

They are so dangerous it's ridiculous that they are even sold imo

catandcoffee · 10/08/2022 17:34

No but its better than smoking weed, doing coke, doing heroin also drinking alcohol.

You're preaching to the converted re. avoiding pregnancy but some people get pregnant unintentionally.

Why though? Nobody will ever answer this honestly. You don't actually care about some random strangers random kid. So what do people get from anonymously judging this complete stranger on the internet. Is it the feel good factor you get from the other sanctimummies patting you on the back?

No-one on Mumsnet seems to judge obese women for not manging to lose weight before TTC, so why would they judge a nicotine addict for not managing to give up smoking?

The risks to mother and baby are very similar.

MissMaple82 · 10/08/2022 17:37

It's not socially acceptable, far from it!

This has crossed my mind before.

MushMonster · 10/08/2022 17:40

I do not think is acceptable, at all.
Also, smoking while pushing a pram. I hate that!

ChagSameachDoreen · 10/08/2022 17:41

Yeah it's fine.

Hmm
Madwife123 · 10/08/2022 17:42

WhimsicalGubbins · 10/08/2022 15:34

It’s not socially acceptable, hadn’t been for at least 30 years-but it’s also none of our business. It’s up to her midwives to lecture her. She is also opening herself up to being on social services radar.
Anyone that smokes while pregnant isn’t just putting the baby at risk of SIDS, they’re also more likely to smoke in the house and car-which is now illegal with babies and children

You are very naive if you think social services care one bit about pregnant women smoking or mothers smoking around children. They are swamped with much more serious abuse.

HailAdrian · 10/08/2022 17:43

No-one on Mumsnet seems to judge obese women

Haha good one

Aokay1 · 10/08/2022 17:45

It's an addiction. Of course it can be harmful to baby I think everyone here and every woman who is pregnant and smoking cigarettes agrees with that.

Addictions aren't known for being able to stop whenever you should really are they.
