Blown plaster- private rented

Hi, we've recently moved into a privately rented house, it's in dire need of redecorating as there is mould in most rooms, which we've been told was caused by previous tenants not ventilating the house properly, so decorating would be sufficient enough so the landlord said he was happy for us to strip wallpaper and redecorate. We've started in a couple of rooms but the plaster in one room has blown, as we've removed the paper it's taken off chunks of plaster with it in some areas. We couldn't leave the paper on as there was several layers of paper that had also been painted over between layers so the paper had turned really stiff and was lifting off in most aeas and had grown mould underneath and it will be our DD bedroom. My question is AIBU to think the landlord should resolve this or can he say we caused the damage by removing the wallpaper? We didn't use a wallpaper stripper as it peeled off easily and we can actually feel how soft the walls are by slightly pressing on them, it moves.

If is it sections rather than whole walls, you can repair with pollyfilla. I would suggest photographing and contacting the landlord though. It’s not your fault, and as they agreed the decoration they will most likely sort out the repair.

Hi, I rent out my previous home. Definitely a landlord issue, the house should be a in a good condition with no mould etc ! I just hope you’re not going to have any problems here as the worrying thing he was prepared to rent it to you like this! This is what gives private landlords a bad name . Read through your contract and takes lot’s of photos in case he tries to claim you have caused the problem.

You shouldn’t be forced to decorate a rented property !

It’s down to the landlord to fix the underlying problem and then decorate himself

Thanks all, I did think it would be the landlords responsibility but wanted to double check, before I raised it with him. I've already had someone out to repair things on day 2 that they've not done before we got the keys, I'm sure they hate us now 🙈

You shouldn't be forced to redecorate a rented property and if there's mould in most of the rooms it's the landlords job to remove it.

He's pulling a scam on you and getting you to pay for decoration so he doesn't have to.

Personally I would look at finding somewhere else asap.

Just so you know the line 'the old tenants didn't ventilate the property' is such bullshit. We've recently moved from a mouldy property where no amount of ventilation or running a dehumidifier 24/7 would work. The house was shit, mould grew faster than we could treat it, every worker we had in said the property was shocking and would continue to grow mould until the landlord actually updated and improved the property. It ate any heat and cost a fortune to keep any warmth in.

I suggest you move.
