Just that really. Aibu to think Mumsnet has run it's course?

PlentyMorePebbles · 10/08/2022 00:32

Something fairly dramatic happened here the other week, I definitely would have posted about it if it had happened in the past but it didn’t seem like a good idea this time. The DM would have leapt at it.

HauntingScream · 10/08/2022 00:32

Sometimes I feel like that there is an effort to take mumsnet down.
Women getting support, being strong and independent pisses some people off.

I think as Mumsnet members we probably think this forum is way more important than it is.

In the wider world, people really don't give much of a shit.

People often refer to 'Lazy journalism' on here but it's not really, it's just modern journalism. It's been like that for years and it will continue as long as people use the internet.

Unless people expect journalists/researchers to hark back to the days where they took to the streets with clipboards 😁

BlanquitaPerla · 10/08/2022 03:34

I'm in the US and this whole site is a roast fest for me. These posts, along with the comments, show up on Reddit, IG and NewsWeek to name a few sites. Nothing of what we share is private anymore. I wouldn't share anything here except my comments to specific posts... and even then I have to watch what I type because I know myself lol....

portinahurry · 10/08/2022 03:36

Yes.

LovelyQuiche · 10/08/2022 04:11

Yes there’s been a couple of times I wanted to start a thread but knew it would be ripe for picking by the DM so didn’t.
Though I commented on someone else’s thread once and my comment was screen shotted for the DM article. I felt then that I’d really made it in life…

Boxowine · 10/08/2022 05:36

There is a lot more coverage of mumsnet threads in MSM. I'm a little reluctant to post because I think that there are more fake posters now. Not just to create drama to write about but also agenda pushers for lack of a better word.

I've just PM 'd someone (and I hope it does not make me look like a nutter!) because if I posted on her thread and it was published it would out me to all my friends/family and I don't want that Blush bloody lazy journalists have a lot to answer for.

No - that's your responsibility, not the fault of the journalists. Anything you post can be reproduced anywhere.

Apologies - I see you didn't actually post on the thread. My general point however is the same - people need to realise that this isn't a cosy confidential chat club.

BlusteryLake · 10/08/2022 06:46

It puts me off posting for sure. People always use the whole "it's all public and if you post on MN it's in the public domain etc etc" But the tabloid press have a much wider audience than MN. So whilst I'd be pretty confident Joe Bloggs who lives a couple of doors down with his bloody selfish habits won't see if I moan about it on here, he may well see it in the tabloid press. The two audiences just don't compare in my opinion.

Maireas · 10/08/2022 06:56

Maves · 10/08/2022 00:26

They've had one of mine before but I don't give two shits the stories are online and not in any main page that anyone is probably even going to notice, you've probably got more views on here than the daily mail anyways! You post something publicly it's public wherever it is...

That's going straight into The Sun:
How Many Old Pairs of Knickers Do You Have?.

Mamette · 10/08/2022 07:00

The fact that anything you write is in the public domain has put me off starting threads yes, not just recently but always.

Anything I post in response to someone else’s thread is usually fairly tame and measured, I did used to be more open and frank and in the past I have been quoted in the DM and was regularly in the MN talk round-up. These days I rarely post personal info beyond e.g. what hairdryer I use, and if I do give an opinion it will be worded carefully.

BluOcty · 10/08/2022 07:04

Name changed after I made the top section of the DM website 😱😱😱

ilovesooty · 10/08/2022 07:07

It doesn't matter in my opinion whether or not the two audiences compare. I'm mindful that what I post could be published anywhere and I post accordingly.

Mellowyell292 · 10/08/2022 07:35

Yes, I've started and deleted many threads or you have to change the details so much to be none identifying that the original context is lost.

ClottedCreamAndStrawberries · 10/08/2022 07:37

No, but every time a newspaper picks one up and I know I’ve posted I’m extremely nervous. I’ve never yet had a post printed i’m probably too boring but it may still happen 😬

TheYearOfSmallThings · 10/08/2022 07:41

Ha ha NO. The media has consistently shown a startling lack of interest in any aspect of my very mundane life!

It is actually number 1 on my list of things I don't need to worry about.

DorisWallis · 10/08/2022 07:45

Everything you write on the Internet is written in ink
It won't go away even if deleted

mumda · 10/08/2022 07:46

I suggested a signature banning media use of words or story.

C8H10N4O2 · 10/08/2022 07:48

PersonaNonGarter · 09/08/2022 23:43

No - my life isn’t that interesting and I am not so self-absorbed.

And even if the news media was so desperate that my level of ordinary was needed, then I'd be competing with a couple of hundred other ordinary threads every day.

ApolloandDaphne · 10/08/2022 07:50

No, but I don't post anything of great interest to anyone, especially not anyone in the media.

Brefugee · 10/08/2022 07:53

I don't think this is a new thing though, so in that respect YABU. On the other hand the number of threads that I've seen recently that seem as though they could plausibly come from a staff-writer looking to cover opinions on a topic has rocketed.
Some are interesting discussions, others not so much. And of course they may be genuine MNetters trying to start a conversation. So I'll contribute if it's an interesting topic that i have thoughts about. Otherwise? I read with a large pinch of salt.

A few years ago i read the book "Can any mother help me?" (link in title goes to the goodreads description). Which shows that things like MN a) aren't new and b) are needed

DFOD · 10/08/2022 08:02

Do troll and deleted threads get inadvertently picked up by the media?

And do the undercover journalist ones get picked up by other media outlets?

DFOD · 10/08/2022 08:03

Are MNHQ feeding the stories to drive traffic to the site?

PlantChef · 10/08/2022 08:07

Yanbu.

I’ve wanted to post about a few things but haven’t in case it did end up somewhere else.

The trolls are annoying too and the fake posts and the merailers.
