Daley + LGBT + "anonymous" people

I'm watching Tom Daley's programme about LGBT sports people and the Commonwealth Games. There was a female athlete (not going to give more info than that) who only agreed to speak on condition of anonymity because of fears of reprisals. He's shown videos of LGBT people being seriously assaulted.

Well her face was blurred and hair not seen - but she was filmed walking from the front and back. For sure if I was in her team I'd know who she was. It's not the first time I've seen this happen on TV but AIBU to think this is highly unethical - at best?

What did she say?

Boxowine · 09/08/2022 21:58

You're not wrong, that is a biometric.

SarahAndQuack · 09/08/2022 22:01

Are you sure it's her, not an actress with her voice dubbed over? That's not super uncommon.

If she was an actress he didn't say she was - and usually they would say, "Her words are voiced by an actor" type of thing.

He said he'd finally found a sports person who would speak to him. Then showed the section.

You're not wrong, that is a biometric.

Especially in sport where, for example the physique of a marathon runner is different to a wrestler is different to a gymnast - and the way they carry themselves often is too.

Tom Daley doesn't give a crap about women full stop or women athletes, as evidenced by his activism around including male people in women's sports, making them exclusive of women, unsafe and unfair.
He also paid a woman to carry his baby in a surrogacy arrangement which should be illegal everywhere.
Sad but not surprising if his latest publicity drive has put a woman in danger of harm.

spirit20 · 10/08/2022 00:23

I'd assume she would have been asked about what she felt comfortable being filmed with etc. and she was okay with what was shown.

Yup, yup and yup again!!

I'd be surprised if she'd been shown the footage and asked if it was ok. That would be unusual. I would like to think that's what happened though. But if you say you want to be anonymous then presumably that means you don't want to be recognisable. If you end up being recognisable there's not much point in not showing the camera your face or hiding your head from the camera. So it makes me wonder if she really was ok with being shown walking and full body.

I can’t stand Tom Daley. He’s a horrible misogynist who bought his baby off it’s mother via surrogacy, and who thinks trans identified males should be able to compete in women’s sports.

People falling over themselves to like him because he’s turned to knitting are fools.

jeaux90 · 10/08/2022 08:07

Tom Daley is a misogynist. He clearly doesn't give a shit about women.

drbuzzaro · 10/08/2022 16:54

just watched the documentary. I hope they used an actress or checked with her before airing because some of the stories told on there were horrific. but yeah Tom Daley is the real monster 🙄

BarmyBrunhilde · 10/08/2022 16:58

I imagine it's an actress, such a thing would have been carefully arranged. Good on Tom Daley for shining a light on these issues!

He is in the paper today saying the British empire is the cause of present day commonwealth homophobia.

Now don't get me wrong I am all for slating the British Empire but come on. If nothing else its so fucking patronising and racist. Oh the colonies wouldn't have homophobia only they were so successfully brain washed by the British.

Well of course it's far more complicated than that, but British colonialism did export homophobia to many countries. A number of former colonies (eg Singapore) homophobic laws were British colonial laws.

And what was the status of Gay people in those countries prior to those laws? I don't know by the way, genuinely interested.

I still think it's patronising. There are some things that absolutely can be traced directly back to empire. 100%

But. I feel like colonisation is just an easy excuse for liberal wokies when the optics of a white man lecturing black people are troubling for them. It actually makes it worse "look guys what you are doing is bad! Now don't worry, it's not your fault the nasty British just tricked you and you have stayed tricked ever since!"

Presumably they've developed their own more inclusive set of attitudes and laws around such matters now then?

Do you think the effects of colonialism have just been extinguished?

He's a pillock.

LondonWolf · 10/08/2022 17:33

We left Singapore in 1972 - I'd expect homosexuality in males to no longer be illegal after fifty years - half a century - yes. We left Jamaica in 1962 - sixty years - and same sex intercourse is still illegal there and legally punishable by imprisonment, vigilante executions and beatings amongst other sanctions. At what point would you expect that they be able to shake off the yoke of colonialism and become more accepting of LGB rights? Another 50 years?

SammyScrounge · 10/08/2022 17:35

Daley is an irritating little prat trying to be important. You are right about his dismissiveness of women's sport. I can' t bear to see him trying to be taken seriously - he makes me laugh.

Has anyone on this thread actually watched the documentary?

I haven't, but I read an interview with him (in the Observer, I think) about it.

Is there something the PPs are missing?
