Retractable washing line-am I being stupid

Husband has come home with a retractable washing line, installed it to stop us using the tumble dryer. I think I am stupid but I don’t understand why the double length are so close together? He says he followed the instructions which I can see but are you supposed to use both lengths? Surely they are too close together for stuff to dry properly?!?! I think the heat has got to me so sorry for being stupid in advance

Do you mean its a double line, so two lines out of the retractable unit which go to your wall (or whatever)

so you have two washing line bits?

Of course things will dry even if close together, blowing around and in the warm

You put both ends far apart on the wall, so it's like a triangle. The lines make 2 sides of a triangle. Or at least that's what mine is like

Any retractable lines I’ve had have had two separate lines with hooks/ties on the end. I used to hang the plastic holder on one side of the garden then take one line straight across to the other side, and the other line diagonally across, creating two separate lines. You’ll likely need a washing pole to support the lines as they sag quite a bit without it when you hang washing on it.

I have mine on hooks about a meter apart at the far side so close together at the box but part at the other end. But I don’t think it would be a problem the close together at rotary ones are the same if you think about it.

We’ve got one (had it almost 18 years though so it’s probably not the same) and it has two cords, but they’re separate. We’ve got them going in different directions. One from the wall to the house, and one from the wall to a fence.

flaxensunshine · 09/08/2022 18:57

That’s what I thought that they should be far apart from each other but he has put the double line next to each other as that is what the instructions said to do!

I only use one of my lines normally but if I use the second I take it to a different place on the other side of the garden. You need two points to fix the two lines to. I have a friend with a smaller garden and she takes hers over to the other side then back to the original side further down the garden. She has two different points on each side.

And yes, you need a support pole, especially for bed linen.

Well that’s just daft.

Mine's like OhFatty's pic too. I have hooks about 5 feet apart at the bottom of the garden, not next to each other!

Alphabet1spaghetti2 · 09/08/2022 19:02

Yanbu. We had one of those - the lines run about 2 cm apart in a white case. Ours was supposed to be used double (4 lines) by running around a pole and locking it back on itself, using the clips on the top. Plus using washing poles to prop up the sagging line. Horrible thing.
Going back to a proper rotary line and a weighted parasol base. Currently using a couple of clothes horses which are so much easier and two socktopegs hanging of the hanging basket brackets.

grosgirl · 09/08/2022 19:20

We’ve got about a 6 foot gap between line 1 and line 2. As a PP said, you may want to get a washing pole or two!

MomwasCasual · 09/08/2022 19:23

Oh bless Grin has he ever actually hung any washing out??
