About sending kids to nursery when there’s an Amber weather warning?

Would you be inclined to keep at home? Just interested. YABU to send and YANBU to keep home.

I kept at home on the two red alert days when it was 38-40. I wouldn't keep at home unless 35+

clickychicky · 09/08/2022 18:12

What did you do in the red warning?

I sent mine in. They call if they think they're struggling.

Immaterialatthispoint · 09/08/2022 18:14

Why would you keep them at home? Do they have medical conditions that cause them to suffer more than most kids in the heat, do you not trust the nursery to keep them hydrated and in the shade?

DashboardConfessional · 09/08/2022 18:14

No. It is summer. Sunscreen, hat, shorts, Bob's your mother's brother.

NothingIsWrong · 09/08/2022 18:16

Well I have to work so they will be going 🤷‍♀️

cardibach · 09/08/2022 18:16

Amber warning seems to be for temps that are unusual rather than freakish. I’d send them in. Having said that my DD is 26 and has taken herself to Budapest for a music festival, so my view my possibly be outdated…

BunnyHopDance · 09/08/2022 18:16

Why??

NothingIsWrong · 09/08/2022 18:16

Mine are older now but they are in holiday club and will be going.

TeapotTitties · 09/08/2022 18:16

An amber warning means nothing to people who don't have health issues.

Plus we'd better get used to them as it'll probably be every Summer.

RayneDance · 09/08/2022 18:17

Why would you send them if you can keep them at home?
Bob's your maiden aunt's secret son.

Minecraftatemychild · 09/08/2022 18:17

If you’re able to keep them home in a heat wave, it’s kinder to do so. They’ll be much happier healthier and comfier naked in a shady paddling pool than in a crowded room.

If you work, probably zero choice.

FourOclock · 09/08/2022 18:18

My kids' nursery is outdoors but mostly all shade so they will be sent in. Although the nursery closed for the insanely hot days a few weeks ago so we will see what happens this week.

Bunnycat101 · 09/08/2022 18:19

Depends on your nursery set-up. Mine have a really big shady garden, lots of water play etc so have no issues with my daughter going even on the hottest days. I’m sure there would be some set-ups that aren’t ideal for very hot days (and if yours is one of them I’d think carefully about whether it is sustainable to keep missing days because it’s hot- they may need to invest more in the facilities if parents leave).

TruffleShuffles · 09/08/2022 18:20

My daughters nursery has air con so she will probably be much more comfortable there than she would be at home.

Merrygoroundtoo · 09/08/2022 18:22

If nursery have aircon and your house doesn't, I would say they are better off at nursery.
However if nursery doesn't have good temperature control and your kids don't do well with the heat then maybe best to keep at home.
I sent mine in for the red warning, but did debate whether or not to keep them home.

Likewise!

I mean I could keep him off and do a paddling pool at home but our garden has little shade and the house gets exceptionally warm so he would be much more content at nursery.

fyn · 09/08/2022 18:29

Ours is an outdoor nursery, although they have indoor classrooms that they use rarely. They get out the slip and slide and big paddling pools for the younger ones and take the older ones paddling in the river until it gets too hot, then they play under the sun sails. Much more fun than coming to the office with me!

Whitewolf2 · 09/08/2022 18:29

Ours has air con, I wish there was room for me! Even if it didn’t it’s hard keeping them cool at home too, and at least they are distracted at nursery?

A580Hojas · 09/08/2022 18:30

No need for panic. Please.

CuriousCatfish · 09/08/2022 18:33

Do we have to panic about everything now?

amylou8 · 09/08/2022 18:37

A580Hojas · 09/08/2022 18:30

No need for panic. Please.

Quite! They're going to be the cotton wool generation. Frightened of everything.

stuntbubbles · 09/08/2022 18:38

I sent DD in on day one of the 40-degree heat and she didn’t cope, even though nursery has (shitty) air-con. Kept her at home on the Tuesday. She’s like me, incapable in heat!

I’ll see how this week goes, but she’s off on Fridays anyway. We’ll probably hunker inside all weekend with many ice lollies.

EnglishRose1320 · 09/08/2022 18:38

I'm assuming that all nurseries keep children out of direct sunlight between 11-3, as is the guidelines for all children when the uv levels are high.
So if the nursery follows safe guidelines and they have a good set up, space for more children to be in the shade/inside then I would think it was fine for them to go.
I think I'd only keep them at home if they were either particular bad in the heat or if I knew that the nursery had very little shade, so the kids would all be in a cramp space.

Seems so doesn't it 🤦‍♀️

Bemyclementine · 09/08/2022 18:41

I'm not sure how being at hone will be better. Unless home has aircon.
