Going to Walt Disney world next month. Autistic teen son wants to get some Minnie ears. I think we should let him get some (and he's using his spending money) but husband calmly spoke to me (not in front of our son) and said he doesn't think we should let him. What would you do? He’s worried about people picking on him. Me and his sisters will have Minnie ears like we did last time. WIBU to let him buy Minnie ears? What would you do in this situation? Thanks in advance xx

Get your ds the ears. It's your dh who has the issue and sounds like he is the one who will embarrassed by your ds wearing them

TheFlis12345 · 09/08/2022 13:54

My 6”4 muscled builder mate wore Minnie ears and a sparkly Minnie T shirt at Disney a couple of weeks ago as his 5 year old daughter was desperate for them to match. Not one single person even looked twice. It’s Disney for gods sake!

10HailMarys · 09/08/2022 13:57

OP, I was scrolling Instagram at lunchtime and a fashion vlogger I follow had posted a pic in her Instagram stories of herself bumping into The 1975 (the band) at Disneyland and the band's lead singer, who is a man, was wearing Minnie ears, with bow, in the photo! I immediately thought of your thread.

SarahSissions · 09/08/2022 13:58

If your DH is worried you should all wear them and have it as a family thing. I think it’s lovely your DS wants to be part of the pack!!

lanthanum · 09/08/2022 14:04

I think if DH starts telling DS that Minnie ears are only for girls, then there is a fair risk that DS will start to question their gender identity, and then be wanting to wear a dress too. I suspect DH will be even less enthusiastic about that!

Nobody is going to pick on someone at Disney for what they're wearing. School, maybe.

AverageJoan · 09/08/2022 14:09

No one in 'the happiest place on earth' is going to pick on your son for wearing Minnie ears, I would 100% let him buy some if that is what he wants. Sounds like it's your DH with the real problem here

LookItsMeAgain · 09/08/2022 14:18

Why not get both? If he feels like wearing his Minnie Mouse ears on Monday then he can. If he wants to wear his Micky Mouse ears on a Wednesday then he can do that too, if you get both. Non-issue and I'd also be having a word with your DH about breaking down gender sterotypes and that dresses are not just for girls and neither is make-up etc. etc. etc.

Enjoy your trip to Disneyland/Disney World (never sure which is which)

Hesma · 09/08/2022 14:22

Let him… it’s all part of the magic

WonderingWanda · 09/08/2022 14:38

Tell your dh to lighten up. Get the ears and let him wear them.

There are some hats with ears on which I guess would be “Mickey ears”. But most of the ears are on headbands and would be considered “Minnie ears” or just ears, Mickey ears aren’t really a thing. As the ears are on headbands, they generally are worn by women rather than men.

I hasten to add that nevertheless I do agree with the posts so far that OP’s son should be able to wear them if he wants. I also agree that nobody is going to bat an eyelid. My husband wore a pair of my ears for a night out when we were there recently.

Disneyland - California
Disneyworld - Florida.

😊

Figmentofimagination · 09/08/2022 16:39

Disney have been making more headbands with out the bows, so I guess they could be classed as Mickey ears in some ways. Etsy sellers are also making ears without bows or with other things attached. I've recently seen one man on Instagram post a photo of himself in Epcot wearing Figment themed ears with Figment's horns instead of a bow.

My 5 year old DS has 2 "Mickey" ears from an Etsy seller. One is spider-man themed and one is plain black for Mickey. On our last trip he wore his spider-man outfit with his plain black Mickey ears, even thought spider-man isn't at Disney world. He called himself "spider-man Mickey" for the day and loved the attention he got from cast members.

He also likes to wear my Minnie ears with the bows, so I donated him some of my cheaper Minnie ears for his dressing up box.

I find women usually think differently about these things (and get fiercely indignant) but maybe let your husband make this parenting decision for your son. Maybe there is something to be said for helping him grow up and showing him male boundaries about certain things. Maybe this stuff matters. Just an unpopular opinion I'm sure.

I'm interested to hear more about the male boundaries?

excitingusername · 09/08/2022 17:25

Fish elsewhere.

rainingagain · 09/08/2022 20:17

Boys can wear dresses if they want. They can certainly wear Minnie Mouse ears!

CactusFlowers · 09/08/2022 20:51

It’s Disney, he can wear what he wants. They’d be adults wearing full on customers if they were allowed!

XenoBitch · 09/08/2022 20:53

Disney ears in Disney Land... there is literally no where else where that would be more appropriate. Your DH is an ass.

AryaStarkWolf · 10/08/2022 11:12

It's pretty clear that your husband doesn't want his son wearing "girly" things and isn't actually worried that he will be picked on at Disney World lets be honest

JustSmallFry · 10/08/2022 11:16

Your DH sounds like my DB who seems to think his baby son will turn instantly gay if his hair is allowed to grow long. Utterly barking!
