To think people looked and felt better back in the old days vs now?

Currently watching videos of Olivia Newton-John (rest in peace Flowers) and I always notice people born years and years ago, maybe in the 60s/70s/80s look amazing then and now, no fakeness, I'm always told by my grandparents nobody really back in the day was majorly obese or had any mental health issues. Even the men groomed themselves and dressed amazingly.

What do we think contributes to our issues these days? Is it social media, processed food, unrealistic standards? I'd love to hear everyone's opinion

I look better than either of my grandmothers did at my age (1976 & 1957).

My Nan looked like an old lady from the age of 40 until she died at 90. I don't look like an old lady no matter if the OP thinks I was born 'in the old days' (I.e the 80's!) 🙄

SexyLittleNosferatu · 09/08/2022 20:05

This is just another thread to mock people/beauty trends today

That's exactly what it is. That and yet another thread for people to express their utter disgust that fat people exist.

CandyLeBonBon · 09/08/2022 20:06

The old days!!!????

Behave yourself

shiningstar2 · 09/08/2022 20:08

Lots of young people today are far more physically fit than they were in my 50s and 60s childhood. It is now cool to go to the gym and take part in a range of classes and exercises. Back in the day school exercising consisted of being thrown out on the field freezing in ugly sports kit so it was fairly normal to pack a that in when you left school behind. There wasn't the range of fitness clubs and gums available then so it's great to see young people in town strolling about in sports kit and cool trainers so they go from shopping straight to the gym. We dressed up for town...smart coat and bag, shoes with heels. We might have looked 'smarter' strolling the ships, but in general, even if we were thinner, I don't think we were fitter

XingMing · 09/08/2022 20:09

While I understand all the condemnation, please remember that the workings of the neural system are still not well understood. Medical science cannot fix/correct mental health issues well yet, although there has been massive progress in the last 30 years. And now we have to face the consequences of the dementia diseases which were relatively rare in days gone by, because few people lived long enough to exhibit the worst symptoms. Something more like flu or pneumonia killed geriatric people first.

Excuse typos 😱😁

I know, they're disgusting aren't they those fat bastards. None of that gross blubber back in the day.

Kids were so much better behaved in the old days too. None of this autistic nonsense. If you misbehaved you got a smack round the head.

Dyslexia? What? Nah you're just thick. No point wasting time on thick kids.

Mental health issues? Don't be stupid. Women that had time to be miserable just needed a belt.

Ah the good old days.

APurpleSquirrel · 09/08/2022 20:15

Nope - there was a whole Twitter thread about this a few years ago - I guy asked if people visibly aged faster in the past & the photos people posted were enlightening!

Actually, I think in some ways, it was preferable. My DFIL, DH and DS are all very dyslexic but also clever, competent and very articulate. One became a pilot, another an entrepreneur and the third career was film camera operator. Very visual, but not text based.

Bootothegoose · 09/08/2022 20:18

Celebrities you mean?

Our family pictures from then are really the same as ours are now. The only difference was my dad wore flares. Not a good look 😂

APurpleSquirrel · 09/08/2022 20:18

To show that even actors & sports stars aged quicker back then:

They didn't age quicker. Now there are more interventions and treatments, if one has enough money, and wants to continue in the public eye. Lots of sports people go back to normality. They are probably just sligthly less driven towards celebrity-ville.

Sadly that didn't happen with all children though my son has severe autism and learning disabilities,it would most definitely have been suggested he got locked away in some kind of home a generation ago ,kids that had autism but were able to attend mainstream schools ,were often labelled as naughty , or sometimes " odd"
Someone I grew up with had dyslexia and our primary school head teacher refused to acknowledge and said she was just" backwards " ,in fact she's very able and trained as a HCP hopefully things have moved on somewhat

XingMing · 09/08/2022 20:42

I worked one summer during my university years as a play leader in an institution, for secondary aged kids. It was informative. There are degrees of incapacity. Severe autism or learning disability is really not something most are going to overcome, no matter how much community assistance and medication are available. Very few are going to be able to live an independent fulfilled life and most will need financial and practical support as long as they live.

Yes I'm aware of that having a child with the diagnosis my point was however thankfully we don't just lock disabled children away anymore 🙄

XingMing · 09/08/2022 20:45

@x2boys So you are the loving caring parent whose life will be lavished.

XingMing · 09/08/2022 20:49

I am doubtful that I could have coped. So I am admiring your fortitude and love for your child.

Not sure what you mean by that??

wherearebeefandonioncrisps · 09/08/2022 20:51

I remember the60s and70s.
Hardly any woman was fat unless elderly. Maybe my memories are too hazy.

I recall in the early 70s a huge advertising push on losing weight.
A crispbread company offered chain belts that you wore around your waist , permanently, that would dig in if you put a few pounds in.

I do remember that a size 16 was considered obese.

Clothes patterns only ever went to a size 18, usually. I don't recall size 20 being in the usual patterns. I think you had to buy a different pattern.

AuntMargo · 09/08/2022 18:25

I personally think lots of woman look horrendous nowadays. Ugly tattoos, (and i actually like tatoos) but so many of them they all merge into a blue/black smudge! Make up, resembling the drag queens, fake this, over sized that, orange toned skin, defiantly the drag queen look !

Agree. Someone posted a photo of her night out on FB, I thought she'd gone to a drag show but it was her and her 2 mates. So glad I paused before I commented

You have no idea whether you could have coped or not ,however as a parent with a severely disabled child most of don't just put them away and I know many many parents with children with similar disabilities, and those that do choose residential care do so after many year ,s of not having the support their child needs ,but they do do in their child's best interests.

XingMing · 09/08/2022 20:53

You will devote all your life to caring for your child, SELFLESSLY. You will sacrifice every opportunity for your own life quality.

XingMing · 09/08/2022 20:58

I do somewhat get it as my DM was a MH carer, looking after people whose families couldn't cope any longer. I was profoundly grateful it wasn't my experience.

Fifife · 09/08/2022 20:59

They didn't have 4k videos back then. I don't think being fat actually makes people look facially old plumper people generally look younger than very slim people.

I was born in the early 50's so have seen the 60's to present day. There was no botox or filler and plastic surgery was only a thing for the very rich (and you could tell) but yes there were mental health problems just they weren't talked about, yes there were obese people and the makeup was put on with a trowel! There was also much more expectation about women being made up. I have never liked or worn makeup and I was definitely thought of as odd.
Setting aside the rise in obesity which yes is a fact, basically obese women were invisible. They dressed from "specialist" shops and unless you could afford made to measure there were no fashionable clothes, let alone young fashions. So yeah I was there and you are wrong :) ....and don't start me on foundation underwear!
