Best traps for mouse

Pls help! I know people will make fun of me and tell me to get a grip but this is the first time I’ve ever had a mouse in my flat. I’ve never lived in a home with a garden as I know this is the norm for many people. I’m the sort of person that goes hysterical when a wasp flies into the house.

I have a kitchen (where the mouse is) with no door, it has more of an opening which you step in to. The kitchen is attached to the living room which also has no door! I live here with my two babies and will probably be going to my mum’s as my ex tries to catch it.

Can anyone recommend the best traps they’ve used pls? I don’t care if it kills the mouse or keeps it alive. I just need it gone. Can someone also advise what to do once it’s gone? To I need to close up any small spaces or what do I do??? I genuinely cannot believe there’s a mouse in my flat fml

Assuming you have mice and not rats then it is highly unlikely you have one mouse.

From my experience if you are aware of one mouse then generally there are 6 to 8 mice that you aren't aware of.

Slappy traps (cheap ones from B&Q or Amazon are best). I would put down four or five traps out of the reach of young children/ pets - under a cupboard is great. Also site them along the edge of a wall or cupboard or even better in a corner. For bait I use chocolate ( Choc buttons) which I melt slightly and put in the bait tub of the trap plus a little on the trigger plate.

When disposing of dead mice you should use disposable gloves (Amazon) and double bag the dead mice with the used gloves to be put in a bin. Reset the traps and really wash your hands well afterwards.

Lastly I would leave them down for a month after the last dead mouse.

I hope that helps.

Put traps in all rooms. I bait mine with peanut butter.

pedropony76 · 09/08/2022 09:20

@1dayatatime thank you so much! That’s so detailed.

Can there ever only be one mouse?😭 the thought that there’s more is really killing me

Trip trap with peanut butter. You place them along skirting boards or areas they run. Always at the edges. You can then take it to woodland or gassed area away from your house and release it. Dealing with a mouse cut in half is a bit sickening.

HellaFitzgerald · 09/08/2022 09:57

So you would be willing to kill a living thing that has a family and children of its own just because it makes you feel 'icky'? Nice.

JustTwoNights · 09/08/2022 10:02

Prevention better than cure. Block any small gap around skirting boards and pipes to radiators and floorboards. Anything 5p sized or bigger they can get through very small gaps. Honestly I thought my cats were bringing them in periodically but once I'd sealed up the gaps not one mouse in two years. Wire wool is good in larger gaps then something over the top even duck tape.

pedropony76 · 09/08/2022 10:17

Thank you guys. My mum did mention wire wool so I’ll definitely be looking at small holes and filling them. The only thing is it seems to have come in behind the cooker as that’s where it runs too. It’s also run behind the washing machine. What am I meant to do then? Try and move the appliances and get into a small space to fill it? Can I hire someone to do this😭

Yup. Snap traps, there is never just one and look for poo trail. They usually keep to some path and poop along the way. May tell you how they got in. Never just one.

@HellaFitzgerald are you okay?? Why the HELL would I have a MOUSE living with me unwillingly. If you’re happy to have 20 mice living with you then good for you. I could care less about it’s bloody family and children, it shouldn’t be in my house. Please get several grips

@HellaFitzgerald

What diseases can you catch from mice?

They can carry many diseases including hantavirus, leptospirosis, lymphocytic choriomeningitis (LCMV), Tularemia and Salmonella.

What are the chances of this happening?

f a rodent with the virus bites someone, the virus may be spread to that person, but this type of transmission is rare. Scientists believe that people may be able to get the virus if they touch something that has been contaminated with rodent urine, droppings, or saliva, and then touch their nose or mouth.

Or in other words you may see mice as cute loveable misunderstood creatures whereas I see them as household pests carrying diseases that are a danger to my family and myself and that are in no danger of extinction.

Out of interest do you feel the same way about mosquitoes, wasps or rats?

Danikm151 · 09/08/2022 11:34

Plastic traps kill instantly and are really easy to set.
i plugged up gaps in the skirting boards will wire wool, foil and filler. No mickeys since. Trapped about 6.
also got a cat- the smell of her puts them off.

ChilliPB · 09/08/2022 11:35

I’d get a humane trap, release the mice away from the house and get someone in the mouse proof so you don’t have a problem going forward. It’s cruel to kill mice when there’s a humane alternative.

It's actually killing it slowly. Humane traps are not as cute as people think.

You take an animal from the group and familiar settings and release them in the wild where they don't know it and don't have food source and familiar shelter and they slowly die

gingerscot · 09/08/2022 11:56

as above. The most humane trap is one that kills them quickly. Otherwise house mice will die a long death separated from their family group from hunger or predator.

Nutella in the trap works best, it’s slightly sticky and has a good smell. Bait them, it should only take about 15mins once it’s dark for them to find it. Set it along the skirting board. Make sure you’re comfortable with how the trap works so that you can release the body into a bag without having to look too closely.

Only time you’ll have 1 mouse is if a cat has brought it in. Otherwise there are more. You can get someone in to leave poison boxes down. I had to do that by the time I’d caught 8 and had had enough. The plug in deterrents don’t work at all.

pedropony76 · 09/08/2022 13:18

Guys I really can’t do this😭😭😭

Everyone’s scaring me when they say there will definitely be more than one. Are you sure?? Why oh why Lord

It's just mice not tarantulas. Get solid snap traps and it will be sorted in a week

pedropony76 · 09/08/2022 13:25

😂 sorry but I’m just not built for this.

Ex dp has traps at his house so he’ll get them today and bring them to my house. I’ve read all your tips and will be giving him the information thank you

Yes, nutella works well

For some reason, I don't think Nutella would be best pleased with their product being suggested for murder.

OP, perhaps you are having doubts about "doing this" because "this" is attempting to kill a living thing. Do you not understand that?

noenergy · 09/08/2022 14:17

Rentokil traps with peanut butter

Hella. Do you just live with them?

redwingdress · 09/08/2022 14:22

My only advice is that they go absolutely mad for bakewell tart, I managed to trap one in a bucket after putting some crumbled up bakewell tart in the bottom it climbed up and jumped in to get to it but couldn't get out.
