Non-stick saucepans dangerous?!

I’ve just been reading the article below and feel so anxious. I’ve been cooking my children’s food using non-stick saucepans and am now really worried I’ve put their health at risk! There’s no way I can afford to replace my saucepans - I don’t know what to do 🙁

This has been bandied about since none stick was invented.
Were all going to die of something or another one day.

Genuine question.. how do you stop stuff sticking to a stainless steel pan?!

I end up with more attached to the pan than on my plate when I cook with my one remaining SS pan.

I had no idea about this until reading that article. The thing is I’ve used non stick for years, including scratched pans. I’m worried.

You should watch the film "Dark Waters" , it's a well film about forever chemicals.

This article seems quite good

But how do you stir fry vegetables safely and without pre heating the pan?

FlibbertyGiblets · 09/08/2022 09:04

Janice I have cuisinox pans www.amazon.co.uk/Cuisinox-C61500WX13W23-Elys%C3%A9e-Saucepans-Stainless/dp/B07VC2KX75
No catching on the bottom. I use a spurtle not wooden spoon and stir right into the corner (yes yes I know, no corners, but you know what I mean!) Egg needs the most scrubbing...

merrymelodies · 09/08/2022 09:05

What's a good frying pan? A non-toxic one.

Try not to burn what you're cooking. A bit will always stick to it though, and it's fine. After you're done cooking, just leave the pan to soak with warm water and a bit of detergent for 30ish minutes and scrub with a sponge or metal scourer. It will come off very easily.

I agree with PP that stainless steel pans last forever. Try and get good quality ones if possible

T81272 Cerastone Induction Casserole Dish with Glass Lid, Non Stick Ceramic Coating, Easy to Clean, Graphite, 24 cm amzn.eu/0T3FNpQ Tower T81272 Cerastone Induction Casserole Dish with Glass Lid, Non Stick Ceramic Coating, Easy to Clean, Graphite, 24 cm amzn.eu/0T3FNpQ

I bought these recently as an alternative to teflon non stick. This cerastone coating is meant to be a safe non stick. Doesn’t scratch off. (But for any non stick you should use the non stick safe sponges/cloths.)

OP please don’t get upset about the past or what you can’t change. There was a really good post about making a plan about what you can do to change your situation so that you don’t get bogged down with anxious thoughts.

Like others have said, used stainless steel pans are your best bet.

Newspaper reports of scientific studies are usually inaccurate, biased, sensationalising and lacking context. Don't bother reading the Daily Wail - it's written for those who think their husbands run the country.

whirlyhead · 09/08/2022 09:43

I was cornered in the supermarket recently by a lovely product demonstrator earnestly telling me dishwashing tablets cause cancer. You can't win.

Quite frankly life is fatal. I wouldn't waste your time worrying too much about what's written in the Daily Hate Mail. Basically, every article they write has a sub-text of "panic!"

knittingaddict · 09/08/2022 10:08

I haven't used nonstick pans for years. I have stainless steel and love them. They always clean up beautifully and look good for years.

I do have one nonstick frying pan that I use sometimes. Not sure what I will do when it dies as I like the nonstick element and not sure I could cope without it.

lukelovesu · 09/08/2022 10:35

There are so many things we can worry about that we have absolutely no control over. We often worry to try to get some control. There is no way to avoid forever chemicals. It’s so hard to even get school uniform that is not stain resistant. Think some carpets, sofas, many things that are waterproofed.

I used to feel very overwhelmed by stuff like this too. The amount you’ve been exposed to from the pans will be tiny. Our bodies get rid of a lot of it. There is so much in the environment and we probably cannot measure our exposure. Everything is a risk!
It will no doubt help to reduce your anxiety by replacing your pans and the second hand or the Asda pans as suggested sound good.

PlanetNormal · 09/08/2022 10:45

Never mind nonstick pans. The real danger is taking seriously anything you read about health or science in the Daily Mail or any other tabloid.

It’s sensationalist rubbish written by people who haven’t got a science GCSE between them. The usual scenario is that the report was written by a scientifically illiterate journalist based on a press release written by a scientifically illiterate PR who didn’t understand the piece of research she was asked to publicise. Just ignore this stuff & read about the Kardashians or whatever else is in the tabloids these days. It’s more likely to be based on reality.

Not disagreeing the DM is sensationalist rubbish but this is very old news, I've been aware of it for years and years and I'm over 50.
