Packing to go away in the UK

We regularly go away in the UK. We bought a roof box a couple of years ago due to the huge amount of stuff that 3 year old twins need.

we’ve always packed clothes in a suitcase, never occurred me to do anything different.

A colleague recently asked if we just put clothes in a bin bag and put them in the roof box.

at first I was like erm no we pack them like normal people but the more I think about it the more I think it may actually be a genius idea

YANBU - life’s too short go with clothes in a bin bag

YABU - you are insane, stick to a suitcase

We don’t pack into bin bags, but we do pack into soft, unstructured duffle bags that we put into the roof box. These are fairly modest in size to make them easier to pack into the roof box in between other items. Dirty laundry gets thrown into bin bags in the roof box for the return journey, then straight into the washing machine when we get home.

We use blue IKEA bags. 1 per person. Can be squished into boot v easily.

Suitcases are for planes and trains.

it depends where I’m going - if I’m going to my parents where there’s hanging space in the wardrobe I’ll often take clothes on hangers and just lie them on the back seat of the car then throw undies etc into a smaller bag. But generally I’d pack a hold-all / suitcase. If I’m travelling in the car then stuff like shoes and coats just gets thrown in the boot rather than packed in bags. I often use one of the big supermarket bags for life to bring dirty laundry home in the car.

DinosaursEatMan · 08/08/2022 22:04

We use soft bags for clothes, but they go in the car boot and lighter items go in the roof box. So body boards, buckets and spades, pillows, shoes, etc. It was mainly a pushchair when dc were smaller.

Chdjdn · 08/08/2022 22:06

Bin bags often give clothes a weird smell (in my opinion) and they all get scrunched up etc. A soft bag works much better though than a hard suitcase for the car

Soft bags for roof box and inside car.

If I had 3 year old twins I’d go somewhere with a washing machine and take half the amount of clothes.

redhearts · 08/08/2022 22:08

I take the hanging clothes out of the wardrobe and wrap a rubber band around the hanger hook, pop a hole in the bottom of a recycling bag and put the hangers through the hole.

Save hanging up when we get there and come home.

Never found a smell as always unpacked within 24 hours

I would use something with a handle such as duffle bags or even large, bags for life! Bin bags would be difficult to carry and everything would get mixed up IMO.

PortalooSunset · 08/08/2022 22:14

Hotels/flights would use suitcases.
Camping/holiday cottage zip up bags (pictured)/ikea bags/rucksacks. Dirties come home in bin bags, they're not for clean clothes.

Blue ikea bags or shopping bags for life

Mapletreelane · 08/08/2022 22:19

IKEA blue bags all the way when we're in the car. Easier to pack in car and lighter than cases and holdalls.

imnotthatkindofmum · 08/08/2022 22:21

We use zip up laundry bags as they stack easily in the car boot.

Longdistance · 08/08/2022 22:22

Yes, use laundry bags. IKEA bag is great for the beach.

raffegiraffe · 08/08/2022 22:23

IKEA bags here too

70billionthnamechange · 08/08/2022 22:24

I feel like dick, packed suitcases and barely got them in the car. Next time I'll do bin bags for sure, especially since we just put in a wardrobe when here anyway

ZenNudist · 08/08/2022 22:26

You need packing cubes. We just bundle them in the car.

usernamealreadytaken · 08/08/2022 22:30

We've been using vac bags for a number of years for going away in the UK - absolute game changer! Half the space (same weight though, obviously) so you can either take more or have more space for other luggage. Pack them in a soft bag and vac as you go to make best use of space!

Riverlee · 08/08/2022 22:35

If I packed in a bin bag, I’d probably throw the clothes away by accident!

sleepylittlebunnies · 08/08/2022 22:35

We use IKEA blue bags and use for swimming and beach when there too.

My friend buys these from Avon and say they are brilliant and not too expensive. We are contemplating a roof box for all
The stuff we take everywhere!

justanothermanicmonday21 · 08/08/2022 23:34

Yep I also ikea blue bag our clothes - family of 6 and it all fits just in the roof box that way!

mathanxiety · 09/08/2022 01:56

I used to pack for five DCs and two adults in two laundry baskets plus a duffle. Laundry baskets are handy because when you get home the clothes are ready to throw straight into the washing machine.

OneCup · 09/08/2022 02:12

Bin bags would smell 'plasticky' . Soft bags
