To use stuff in an air bnb?

Staying in an air bnb in Europe. Lovely house, but contains all the owners things in a way I haven't encountered before eg food left in fridge/ freezer, clothes in cupboards, toys on shelves, medication in low down drawers etc. There's room for our things so not too much of a problem, but it wasn't mentioned in the listing (I'd assumed it was a holiday home as other air bnb places I've stayed haven't had this). It's a new rental so no prior reviews. It was expensive but is quite swish (pool, nice furniture etc) - I feel like we've broken in!

Aibu to use some of the things eg shampoo left in the shower, oil in the kitchen? It's hard to keep dc away from lego and nerf guns in easy reach in their rooms!

Can you message the owner or air bnb?

Hellocatshome · 08/08/2022 18:45

That is very odd, I wouldn't feel comfortable at all. All the Air BnBs we have stayed in are obvious holiday lets. They sometimes leave bread, milk, tea bags etc but it's obvious they have been provided for us to use. Does it say anything in the listing about feeling free to use anything you find in the property?

I’d use them, Things like oil, tea coffee or food that’ll perish?

I don't think I'd use shampoo or anything personal. If it were my house id be ok with kitchen consumables like spices, maybe anything that would go off. I wouldn't like personal items to be used - eg makeup, toiletries etc.

I stayed in an air nb in an eastern European country iff the beaten track. I honestly got the vibe that the older parents had been kicked out of the flat for one night
I respected the owners things and didnt touch a thing that wasnt mine including coffee and milk.

littlefireseverywhere · 08/08/2022 18:46

Shampoos & stuff too seems quite regular to leave these?

Not if a load of other personal stuff like clothes and meds are also there.
Just use your own things and put Lego and stuff out of sight.

ExH let’s his house out on air B and B for weeks at a time (travels with work) and expects people to use things. Not food from the freezer but tea, coffee, shampoo and toys are fair game (drives our shared children mad mind that other people play with their toys and go through their things).

Is there a house “guidebook”? We stayed in a house like this, family home and the (lovely) owners had left detailed notes saying we were more than welcome to use everything.

We did let DC play with the toys but made sure DC were careful with them and put everything back where it had been left - I advise taking photos as a record of where things started!

We used a bit of cooking oil and salt but nothing else, would have felt a bit cheeky to use more but I suspect the owners wouldn’t have minded at all.

If there aren’t notes - I would say anything left out is ok (but put back at the end). Anything put away is off limits.

Are you sure you're in the right house?! Grin We had similar in one AirBnB but all the owners stuff was mostly locked away and there was clear guidance on what we could and couldn't use. Have to say I hated it though, felt like I couldn't relax.

pastaparadise · 08/08/2022 20:51

No can't find any guidance apart from a sheet re WiFi, hot tub and TV. And a note daying their cat will come into the garage for food! No other instructions. Just closed a bedroom door and photos of their dc all over the back which feels really weird and strangely un nerving. I wouldn't use make up etc or anything put away, but wondered re shampoo left in the shower and perishables left in the fridge? Moved chocolates left in dc room as too tempting, but no where to move all the toys to! Think I might mention it in the review. Everything is very clean and lovely so don't want to complain but it is strange.
