To want my Dd1 to be safe at school?

Background- Dd1 is 7 and has mild cerebral palsy, ADHD and learning difficulties. she is statemented and has about 18 hours a week support in class. BUT yesterday I got a phone call saying she had had a bad fall and could I come and collect her.

When I got there she had a nose bleed, has scraped her nose, had a large bump on her head and put her teeth through her lips Nearly every day I get a letter in her bookbag saying she has banged her head and a cold compress was applied. I want someone to watch over her, she should be watched, one day she is going to bang her head so hard, she will end up in hospital.

Her statement review has just be done, but haven't heard back yet as to how many hours she will get this year. Can I request extra hours to cover breaks and lunchtime?

sparkly I have no idea but wanted to post
must be a worry for you ATM.

Shitemum · 20/01/2008 00:08

This is probably a really stupid suggestion but if she is falling this frequently shouldn't she be wearing some kind of head protection?

Ags · 20/01/2008 00:09

How awful for that to happen when she is out of your care. You must feel very helpless.

Have you posted on the Special Needs site to see how others may have dealt with similar problems? You might get some real help.

sparklygothkat · 20/01/2008 00:11

I asked about head protection before, but the hospital didn't think she needed it

maybe they need an update then?

sparklygothkat · 20/01/2008 00:14

the nurse said that normally if she is really wobbly when she gives Dd1 her meds at lunchtime, then they keep her in. But they didn;t yesterday

Hm...does your daughter hit her head this frequently at home? If not...why is she hitting her head/hurting hersself so frequently at school?

sparklygothkat · 20/01/2008 00:29

She does fall a lot, but no she doesn't hit her head that much at home, but we are always reminding her to watch where she is going, to take thing slowly.

Head protection sounds like a good idea. Tell the hospital what's been happening - have you logged it all ? - it helps, because just saying 'it seems to happen a lot' won't have the impact of actually having a list of dates, times, injuries.
I would also talk to the school about how they utilise their support time. As a SENCO, it sounds to me like break and lunch are the hotspots - when your dd is most likely to hurt herself. Support should be focused on these times, and probably PE and maybe practical/moving around subjects. There are probably other times during desk based activities that your dd is fine, so it's a case of how to manage support rather than just trying to get extra hours.

i am shocked that she hasn't got a padded hat. i know that they are not pretty though. dd has one and it is horrid and makes her head sweat. contact the ss ot.
(oh sparkly do look at my thread in "news" about a funny tale you will love it;o)
