Dog walking frequency

After some advice on a temporary situation. In the below circumstances, is it okay to walk 9 month old Cocker cross Jack Russell every other day?

It’s 29 degrees here today and doesn’t look like it’s going to be much cooler for the rest of the week.

I’m pregnant (third trimester) and anaemic so feel rotten.

I also have a DS who is 4 and goes to bed at about 7:30ish so walking in the late evening when it’s cooler isn’t really an option.

DH is away with work for 10 weeks so I don’t have anyone else who could walk her.

Am I being really unreasonable to walk the dog every other day? She isn’t climbing the walls; she’s happy having a short play in the garden with DS but then has a long sleep. Every other day, I can take her for about an hour in local forest but I just can’t face doing it every single day in this heat…

I walk my gsd every other day mainly because of heat and he is doing just fine and he is a long haired dog xx if your feeling overwhelmed with it all maybe you could look for a local dog walker to take some pressure of you until after the birth (congratulations by the way) and until your husband returns xx

try it and see op.
if you have ball games early morning late evening in the garden that might suffice
and other mind games,puzzles

It totally depends on the dog and you say yours is happy so it's fine in the short term.

However, if it starts to get destructive/cantankerous around the house, you'll know you need to walk it even if it means moving your child's bedtime.

MrsLargeEmbodied · 08/08/2022 12:16

otoh cant you all go out at 8 or 9 in the morning?

GuyFawkesDay · 08/08/2022 12:17

I'd get a dog walker too. My cocker is out at 7/8am when it's hot, we do our "big walk" then and then we have a potter round the village and a runabout on the park about 8/9pm.

A day or here or there won't hurt but do plenty of mental enrichment and training to tire dog out.

PoolSquid · 08/08/2022 12:18

Is it not possible to do a walk in the morning? Unlike the hot weather before, it is cooling down reasonably overnight so should be possible to walk without getting up at silly early hours. Doesn't have to be an hour in the forest, a twenty minute on lead sniffy walk is likely to be beneficial.

JMO, but if you have a garden, and also doggo has people around in the day, (and therefore has company,) I cannot see any problem whatsoever in just walking her every other day. Smile She probably CBA to go for a walk in this heat/hot weather anyway!

As I have seen on Twitter and Facebook repeatedly this past few months, no dog EVER died from missing a few walks! Flowers

WillPowerLite · 08/08/2022 12:29

The best time for a walk is the morning, as it is coolest. Just so that you suffer less!

Every other day is fine, though. Increase the time in the garden and games if you think ddog seems restless.

BeanieTeen · 08/08/2022 12:31

If you can walk it every other day, why not everyday? I don’t really see the difference?
This week while it’s hot it obviously can’t be helped, I wouldn’t worry about that - but over the next 10 weeks I’d definitely look into getting a dog walker.

Cockerwalk · 08/08/2022 12:35

Yes, could take her earlier in the morning! Once DS is up and about and breakfasted etc, it’s usually getting on for 9:30-10:00 and I don’t like to rush him in the morning as we’re both ‘on holiday’ at the moment but if needs must then that it what we could do

Should add, we had a week at the coast last week, where she was walked every day; if not by me then by DM and DF. Then end of next week, we’re off to Scotland, where she’ll get plenty of walks and has doggie company!

I’ve attached a photo of DDog’s current pose because ‘why not?’ 😊

My dog walker doesnt take mine out when its very hot, her time is lunchtime which is the hottest part of the day. I completely understand, dog walker also has to be out in the heat for hours if walking several dogs. Mine is going out early morning and in air con car for 2 mins to get to woods for later walk.
Pavements are also boiling hot. I also have a cocker who is hyper even after a good walk !

Cockerwalk · 08/08/2022 12:39

@BeanieTeen honestly, with being anaemic at the moment and only just starting treatment, absolutely everything feels like a monumental chore. Even putting the hoover round necessitates multiple sit downs and a racing heart rate. The idea of not having to take the dog out and just be able to sit down makes me want to weep with happiness (only slight exaggeration).

Once DS and I are back at school, normal life resumes and my DM and I take it in turns to walk DDog so I’ll only be doing every other day anyway.

It won't harm them, the dog may turn into a massive PITA in the meantime though!

My lad is off for neutering this week, so is on limited exercise and it's going to be hot and I am hoping the heat will help him stay chilled because otherwise restricted exercise makes him a total asshat.
