To want to smash to smithereens these loud backfiring / popping cars

hattie43 · 07/08/2022 23:00

Our local villages and town have become increasingly blighted by kids in really loud cars , speeding , popping and backfiring using the roads and streets as a racetrack .
Our local Facebook page is littered with people so upset about interrupted sleep , scared animals , distressed young children and yet we are powerless to stop or reduce it .
I don't even know if these cars are legal but there's never any police around to catch or stop them .
What do other communities do , any ideas , how or why do immediate neighbours of these kids put up with it .

Very much the same as your community really, just moan about it on Facebook. Sorry it’s happening where you are too, it’s massively annoying.

ohblowmedown · 07/08/2022 23:09

Same here, motorbikes too. Stupid little twats.

justfiveminutes · 07/08/2022 23:11

It's here too but I don't really understand why they do it. Are those popping noises considered cool, something to strive for? I always assume it's a shitty little car. Maybe we make it uncool by all doing it.

Lunar270 · 07/08/2022 23:13

I have a car with a loud exhaust and love it but is really a weekend car. There's much to like about a sports exhaust but appreciate it can be a pain.

There are laws on how loud an exhaust can be. But sadly the police are useless and can't be bothered with much nowadays.

If these kids are a constant nuisance you could use a dB meter and sit outside, much like those who take it upon themselves to measure the speed of vehicles driving through villages etc. If these exhausts are illegal then you can report them online and hope the police do something about it.

In the old days, exhausts would crack and pop on the overrun (on larger engines) but nowadays it's manufactured into the car as it is considered 'cool' and the drive for smaller engines means that they don't typically crack and pop. BMW, Audi, Ford, Hyundai and many other marques are guilty of this but naturally boy/girl racers can modify their own cars to do the same. The trouble is, DIY modifications can be significantly louder and is getting silly.

I call them farty cars.
Twats they are, the lot of them!
I think it annoys my dogs too.

A proper sports car engine, with a proper engine is a thing of beauty. Even a motorbike noise sometimes can sound pretty cool.

But the farty cars piss me off no end.

There's only 1 that I was aware of around here and I can hear it at random times. Maybe there are a few, I didn't realise it's a national problem.

adesias · 08/08/2022 00:48

Seems trendy in my city as well. I believe you have to "over pump" fuel into the engine so that the fumes in the exhaust pipe still contain enough petrol to "afterburn" and make that banging noise. It is an extremely eco-unfriendly way to treat your motor and serves no other purpose than making a noise.
I understand it's a skill to achieve it, and kids will try and be thrilled they get to create that bang. However, going around the city doing this at 2 am is not my idea of fun. With the trend to become "greener" it should actually become a banned and fineable activity.

I have a car with a loud exhaust

Which car is it @Lunar270 ? I hardly think it will be “outing”

and love it but is really a weekend car.

What makes it a “weekend car” and how is that relevant?

There's much to like about a sports exhaust

What is to like about it and whom benefits?

but appreciate it can be a pain

Clearly not enough to stop causing pain by owning one

IdasFlowers · 08/08/2022 01:21

I occasionally hear the farty cars and loud motorbikes/sports cars. It's annoying. Why are they called sports cars? I thought sports required physical effort. I guess its like sportswear worn to watch TV

Phrenologistsfinger · 08/08/2022 01:49

Hopefully the move to electric will reduce this in time. can’t happen soon enough!

We have a motorbike one going up and down the main road in a quiet suburban residential area at all hours. Everyone hates him (let’s face it, it will be a man).

It's a classic 2 seater with original sports exhaust. It's louder than your usual petrol engined car but really no louder than a diesel engine idling.

I already have an electric car so a weekend car is exactly that. Driven at the weekend for fun and taking my wife to the pub.

As to who benefits, I do as do other car enthusiasts who appreciate the sound of a car. I guess it's like those who like steam engines and other types of machinery. I like the sound of a combustion engine as do many others (including my wife). I get the impression you might not have an interest but as polluting as they are, the engine is quite remarkable and some sound incredible.

Regards to them being a pain. I'm referring to the OP and the trend for ear splitting pops and bangs. Mine is quite legal and makes no such fakery but just purrs along. Much more pleasant than all the noisy smokey diesels on my estate anyway.

DdraigGoch · 08/08/2022 02:04

OP, I've got half a sack of potatoes which are probably past their best. Would you like to me to see if any of them might fit in those exhausts?

Flamingooooooooooooooo · 08/08/2022 02:08

Some lads who live near us have them. Fucking annoying.

I literally don’t understand the mentality. Genuinely can’t wrap my head around why you’d want your car to do that on a shitty little estate filled with families and pensioners. Not one person is impressed. there’s nobody here to show off too.

its just forcing their weird loud noises on us? What gives them the right to do that?

I might start retaliating by letting my toddler out in the garden at 5am to sing whatever song she’s obsessed with that day

89redballoons · 08/08/2022 02:20

This happens round here too. My toddler's room is in front of a road they drive on and he hates the noise. White noise/ocean waves recordings do help mask outside noise for him at night.

Friends have just bought a v v expensive electric car. It still revs, because the manufacturer has (essentially) fitted a loudspeaker to the car to imitate the noise of an ICE’s turbo engine.

In 10 years time as the technology trickles down, boy racers will be fitting these to their Audi A1 and BMW 2 series so I don’t think relief is necessarily on the horizon 😫

Porridgeislife · 08/08/2022 03:45

BMW 1 series. No idea where I got 2 series from.

PrincessGraceless · 08/08/2022 06:42

Was driving through the Blackwall Tunnel recently (it was a Saturday evening if that has any bearing) and there were these almighty bangs. Really scary. Sounded like there had been an awful crash/explosion. But no sign of an incident and someone said it was souped up cars backfiring in the tunnel. There was some kind of ‘meet’ a bit further along. Is this a thing?

Let's hope you don't need the police for an event in your life. Or perhaps if you do, let's hope you get the 'useless and can't be arsed' ones.
Have you any idea or do you just spout your daily mail informed thoughts because you cannot be arsed to find the truth for yourself?

Well someone got out the wrong side of the bed this morning!

I'm speaking from experience as it happens, having recently rushed to my daughter after she was left distraught and crying on the roadside after her car was pretty much written off.

She was involved in a hit and run where someone smashed into the back of her car at a roundabout. Police weren't interested and told her to log the incident online.

As she was so shaken, she drove to the nearest car park to compose herself and found that the offender had dumped the car and run off. She called the police again as the offending car could've been stolen or anything. Again the police weren't interested. "Log it online please".

The police are supposed to come out for road traffic accidents where there's significant damage. My daughter was clearly distressed on the phone but they obviously listened and decided that they couldn't be arsed.

Can you imagine if your car had just been stolen and the police couldn't even be bothered to check a number plate on a hit and run. This is sadly the level of policing nowadays and you're on your own unless the crime fits their requirements for a call out.

I say this as someone who has a mate that works for the Met so think I have a fairly good idea thanks.
