Terrified of moving

Hi all,

We are finally making our big move to the Lake District next week and I'm absolutely petrified we are making a mistake.

We are giving up our assured tenancy on our housing association flat in SE London for private renting (with a view to buying in near future). I was okay with this due to cost being much lower etc but now doubting myself.

We have a 10 year old who seems to be taking it in his stride but I'm going to feel awful if we move and he hates it.

Has anyone here done such a big move and have any advice on how to help us settle in that little bit better. Or if you think I'm making a huge mistake, please tell me! Not sure if it's just cold feet or if it's the wrong decision entirely!

I'm sorry but I would not be giving up an assured tenancy to private rent.

BipolarSunset · 07/08/2022 11:30

@WeAreAllLionesses I completely get that but the place we are in right now is awful. Terrible neighbours throwing litter, sanitary towels and food waste into our gardens (we are a ground floor flat). Also have a rat problem in the block. HA won't do a thing with the neighbours as no 'evidence' on who is doing this.

Tried to do a mutual exchange but because we are going so far no one was interested - we wanted out of London when DS was a baby, he's 10 now and it's a necessity for us to have him out of London before secondary school 😩

You will be fine. Take a breath.

HellaFitzgerald · 07/08/2022 11:36

I think this is a really bad idea

CounsellorTroi · 07/08/2022 11:39

It’s absolutely normal to feel anxious before doing something life changing. Doesn’t mean you are making a mistake.

Glitterbiscuits · 07/08/2022 11:54

The Lake District is gorgeous! Where will you live?
Have you got jobs lined up?

I think it's worth the risk.

dimples76 · 07/08/2022 11:54

It is a big change, no wonder that you're feeling anxious. Just remember all the things that are getting you down about your current home. Of course there will be challenges ahead but you can make it work.

No2incoming · 07/08/2022 11:58

Could end up being the best thing that ever happened to you and your family! Try and embrace it and enjoy the process. There maybe a few bumps in the road settling in, but these things in life are worth it. Good luck! Smile

BipolarSunset · 07/08/2022 12:04

@Glitterbiscuits we've got a house in Cockermouth all ready to move into and DH has a transfer arranged whereas I work from home so covered work wise!

The excitement outweighed the scariness up until a few days ago! 😂

I moved over 15 years ago from major city to house in the country. Never regretted it. It won't be all plain sailing. There will be days you will ask yourself why you did it. Rearing children in the country is completely different. You have to drive them everywhere, school, playdates all activities. We found the cost of living is cheaper so our children got to be involved in a lot more than if we were still city living. We were made welcome from the start. Children settled in school. smaller classes. My advice is to go out and introduce yourself to people as quickly as possible. Try and find a boy your sons age who will be in school with him so he knows someone going in. You are doing the right thing

mumonthehill · 07/08/2022 12:07

We made a big move to the countryside when ds were 9 and 2. It might take time to settle in but treat it all as an adventure. It takes time to build new networks so do not expect instant friends but take every opportunity to be part of new community. You might miss bits of your old life, this is normal but I found new thinks that I loved that I could only find in my new home. We are now 12 years in to our move and we are very happy. Dc have thrived living in the countryside and sea on their doorstep. We have good friends and are so glad we moved when we did. good Luck!!!

So glad to hear this, your original post sounds like normal last minute jitters to me. Enjoy your new adventures!

Lexiblue · 16/08/2022 07:09

I would definitely move, but try to buy ( as you plan to) asap, as there is no security in private renting.

I think its just ( natural) nerves, but I'd just take a deep breath and do it!! Good luck!

LizzieSiddal · 16/08/2022 07:11

@Lexiblue it’s polite to at least read the OPs posts!

Lexiblue · 16/08/2022 07:20

LizzieSiddal what did I miss?
