AIBU To think I’d have enough energy for a second job

I work full time, earning 27k. 9-5. Fairly flexible hybrid role. I love my job. OH on similar wage. No kids yet. Half of our combined monthly income goes on bills and food. We are trying to save as much as possible and so I am considering looking for a second job to boost this process or allow more spends on fun / allow me to still spend like I would were there no cost of living crisis.

Would I wear myself out by working a second role say 2 evenings a week? Does anyone do this?

Yeah why not. It’s 2 nights a week and it will be easier to do without DC so make the most of this time

Yes, I have done a variety of side jobs over the years. Youth work, tutoring, selling on ebay....

Crimblecrumblerules · 05/08/2022 20:47

I have an extra Saturday job as a viewings assistant in an estate agents. 9-5 but so easy and stress free and quite often no viewings so I read a book and still get paid.

I would work a second job if I didn't have children and more free time. No harm in giving it a go if you want!

Mybestyear · 05/08/2022 20:55

problem is there might not be very much money in doing a few hours in two evenings once tax/NI/travel off. I’d think about something where you might get tax free tips in addition to wages like waiting tables or delivery for restaurants/take aways (if u drive/have car).

Flopisfatteningbingforchristmas · 05/08/2022 20:56

Give it a go. If it doesn’t work you then you can leave.

I think it’s a good idea and totally possible. Just make sure you talk to HMRC as if you are paid PAYE from job no. 2 they will likely put you on an emergency tax code at first. Should be ok to sort out, but the only way is to call them.

I did pt jobs on top of 35 hour full time jobs with hour commute.

For one it was Saturday nights.

For another I went straight from work to a 6-9pm job 3 nights a week.

In 20s with no health problems you should have plenty of energy for this!

Thinkbiglittleone · 05/08/2022 21:09

Absolutely not unreasonable.
I used to work 2 jobs, a mon- fri job then a Friday, Saturday and Sunday night job. I loved it.

TamSamLam · 05/08/2022 21:15

Seems rreasonab le. Check its allowed under your current contract (we have to get 'permission'). And I'd recommend doing something totally different from your day job so it still feels like a break.

lechatnoir · 16/10/2022 11:03

Almost identical financial/work situation (albeit older with dc) and wondered if you ever got a 2nd job and how it's gone. Or anyone else

lechatnoir · 16/10/2022 11:05

Ooop posted too soon. Basically thinking I should get a 2nd job and unsure what would work around an office type role and any pearls of wisdom from people who do similar. I do some babysitting but it's not regular enough and I'd like to start bringing in more money as we get nearer retirement.

OhThatChicken · 16/10/2022 11:08

Totally doable. I have a similar FT (hybrid working/desk bound office type) job as you and do a regular 15-hour a week freelance gig. Mine is evenings and weekends and while it's a bit full on because it takes some juggling I had grand plans to knock it on the head after I came back from holiday in the summer but then my energy Direct Debit went from £108 a month to £425 and I daren't now.

kikiterrific · 16/10/2022 13:35

I think it's doable.

If your DH is going to do the same, consider trying to work at similar times so you can still spend quality time together.
