I didnt know where else to post this
im 40 years old have regular periods (although heavy) but Im like clockwork every 28 days
i had my period as normal 16 days ago
i always have painful boobs running up to my period and then eases off once period starts
This time my painful boobs didnt get better just worse and even my partner had been commenting on how big they looked but do painful i couldnt even wear a bra

Anyway period lasted 3 days instead of 5.
I didnt think much of it just got fed up with sore boobs.
Then 2 days ago my boobs suddenly stopped hurting (this is after 3 weeks of pain) and yesterday i began heavy bleeding just like Ive started my period again

i took a pregnancy test yesterday just to rule it out and it's negative

This morning Im still bleeding abd with small clots and cramps

i called GP and had a phone appointment
She said we dont worry unless it carries on for 3 months

she said it can be normal for this to happen
She said its possible Ive had a very early chemical pregnancy

Told me to just observe the symptoms and that was that

But for me Im worried as this has never happened and Ive no way of knowing why.

she said a chemical pregnancy can often give a negative test 😢

Could also be your age as in perimenopause.
You would need longer observation to know if that's likely too.

SalviaOfficinalis · 05/08/2022 12:45

Is it possible you could have been pregnant?

I completely understand that it’s worrying when something is so out of the ordinary for you, but I’m not sure what else the GP could have done. What would you have liked to happen?

Glittered · 05/08/2022 12:49

Theres a chance i could have been pregnant i guess i would have liked the GP to refer me to a gynae dr to find out the cause incase it's something i should be concerned about
i did ask if it could be menopause but she said unlikely to be so sudden

Even with a referral (which they won't do unless you're post menopausal or if abnormal bleeding is persistent or constant), there is no way for gynae to know if it was a chemical pregnancy.

DesMoulinsRouge · 05/08/2022 12:59

Perimenopause is the phase before the actual menopause, it can last for years and can mean all sorts of weird stuff happens.

They don't normally investigate until things have been weird for a bit.

Lots of things can affect your periods like stress, general health, diet but also it could just be a blip.

I guess its just thrown me as Im normally so regular and if it was just a bit of spotting i wouldnt be concerned but its like a full on heavy period

That sounds really confusing and quite distressing, I can understand why you are concerned.

If the GP referred for this as a one off event, the referral would be rejected. That is why the GP mentioned keeping an eye on it to see if it persists - because in that case the gynae referral would be more likely to be accepted.

If you have the symptoms of e.g. an ectopic pregnancy, then urgent referral would be warranted (and would likely be accepted) but the symptoms you described above are not those of an ectopic. If you develop any of them, you should seek urgent medical help.

But from what you've said, no, you haven't been 'fobbed off' because a referral in these circumstances is not likely to be accepted based on what you have included in the posts.

She did offer me something called northisterone which she said would stop the bleeding but she thinks i should just leave my body to do what its doing

Sorry that sounds really distressing and it’s horrible when a doctor makes you feel like an idiot. Just wondering if you have caught covid this cycle? I had covid at the end of June and I am still waiting for my period, now on day 40, (negative pregnancy test)- had some irregular bleeding mid cycle, all very strange and off track. Not bothering with a GP yet as I know they’ll just fob me off and be annoyed for me bothering them with my women’s problems…but anyway could it be covid related?

Glittered · 05/08/2022 19:49

hi no ive never had covid (that i know of)
im still bleeding like a heavy period with small clots
i am wondering if it could have been a very early pregnancy
i just hope it sorts itself out soon

Sorry to hear that, hope you’re ok, it’s a lot to have on your mind x

Floralnomad · 05/08/2022 20:04

Even if she referred you it’s likely you would wait months to be seen . If you are that worried see a private gynae Dr , the initial consultation will likely be about £250 / 300 and if you pick one that does NHS work they will likely move you across .

hi i thought id update just incase it helps anyone else in the situation
today finally after 5 days ive stopped bleeding
well its now just light brown spotting like the end of a period and i feel much better
i have been under a lot of stress lately and im wondering if its possible that i ovulated as soon as my last period ended
i remember having ewcm the day after my normal period which was odd and now wondering if ive ovulated super early and had a random early period??
