To ask how old were your dc when they got chicken pox

DS7 has come down with chicken pox after a few friends in his class at the end of term. I feel like he's one of the last in his class to get it, lots of his peers already had it. Of course DS4 will get it now, just out of interest how old were your DC when they had it? And how long did it take for the siblings to get it?

My oldest son got it when he was 8 ,and his brother caught it off him he was five .

KnottyKnitting · 05/08/2022 10:29

DD1 was 2 and a half- quite a few spots but not too bad.
DD2 went down with it 3 weeks later but had it so mildly- around 7 spots! She was 7 months at the time.

tigger1001 · 05/08/2022 10:30

My eldest was 3 when he had it. And my youngest was 4 months. Took 2 weeks after eldest had them for the spots to show in my youngest.

AnneLovesGilbert · 05/08/2022 10:32

18 months. I was going to get her vaccinated once she’d had her mmr but couldn’t cos of lockdown. She got it twice in a couple of months. In bloody lockdown, and she wasn’t in childcare so I have no idea at all how she caught it.

grey12 · 05/08/2022 10:32

5.5 4 and 1.5 🤷🏻‍♀️ about 2 weeks in between them. They all had different experiences 🤦🏻‍♀️

Try to find calamine lotion in cream form. Much easier to apply

WhatIsModeration · 05/08/2022 10:37

DS1 got chickpea at 17 months from softplay. He was neither up nor down with it, a few spots here and there that cleared within a week. No intense itching or fever. GP said the younger they are they easier they tend to get through it. DS2 is only 5 months so hasn't had the pleasure yet.

WhatIsModeration · 05/08/2022 10:37

Chickenpox*

RelativePitch · 05/08/2022 11:15

DS1 got it at 3 years old. Just 12 spots, not particularly poorly or itchy. 10 days later DS2 18 months old got it and it was horrific. You couldn't see him for spots. So poorly, so uncomfortable. Old wives tale says that chicken pox will be worse if caught off a sibling. So true in our case!

10HailMarys · 05/08/2022 11:31

I don't have kids but my sister caught it from me when I was 5 and she was 15 (she'd already had a very mild case as a toddler but apparently not enough to actually give her full immunity from it).

My ex had it for the first time in his early 30s, so I reckon your DS7 is definitely not one of the oldest ones!

Hope he's not feeling too bad and that it passes quickly for him, and for his little sister too. I can almost smell the Calamine lotion from here...

elliejjtiny · 05/08/2022 11:33

DS1 got it from nursery a week before his 4th birthday. DS2 got it from him aged 2, 2 weeks later and the day after DS1's last spot scabbed over.

DS3 got it from school aged 5. He only had it for 10 days, then DS4 and DS5 both caught it 2 weeks later.

KangarooKenny · 05/08/2022 11:34

Before they started school.

BeanCounterBabe · 05/08/2022 11:41

DD1 caught at nursery aged 3. Quite spotty and a bit of a temperature but not too distressed by it. DD2 aged 6 months caught it from her and was really unwell. Covered in spots and really distressed. It was grim. She was really not great for months afterwards.

CecilyP · 05/08/2022 11:44

DS was 3 and presumably got it at pre-school. My mum's DD, eg me, was 36 and caught it off DS!

iklboo · 05/08/2022 11:45

He was 4. And promptly gave it to me. I was 40.

mrsfoof · 05/08/2022 11:50

DC1 was 5. DC2 (3) had it 2-3 days after DC1, which due to the relatively long incubation period for chickenpox (14 days IIRC), means that they probably both caught it at the same time rather than from each other (likely at soft play when we tracked back to where we'd been beforehand).

imnotwhoyouthinkiam · 05/08/2022 11:50

DS1 was just over 2 years old.

Ds2 was 5 weeks at the time. He ended up in hospital being turned fed because he couldn't keep anything down. He had no spots and they said it wasn't CP. He's nearly 16 now and has never caught it.

soundsofthesixties · 05/08/2022 11:52

Mine was 7. Granddaughter is 13 and has never had it despite every other child in the class having it.

MrsPear · 05/08/2022 11:52

my 2 4 near 5 and 7 near 8. Years reception and 3. The school were awful about the time they took off - - seemed to believe should have only had 3 days off maximum. Had to send daily pictures of them looking crap. Then had a letter home and had to attend a meeting. If you added it up they were off 10 days - 8 of which were school days. Hardly months. The family worker didn’t know what to say I had lost a baby and had a life saving op in that time - this came up as they also brought up my refusal to pick up my youngest 4 days after surgery.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 05/08/2022 11:53

3y 9 months old, gave it to his sister - 8 months old - 13 days later. IME with friends, siblings get it 11-14 days later. (DC are 14 and 11 near enough, we've known a lot of CP!).

womaninatightspot · 05/08/2022 11:55

One of my twins had it, the other twin had a couple of spots that I assumed would turn poxy but they never developed heads and went away. Maybe just a mild case? Wouldn’t have thought it was chicken pox had her sister not had it.

littlepeas · 05/08/2022 11:57

dc1 was 4 and picked it up in nursery - he felt the most unwell.

dc2 was 3 and had the most spots.

dc1 was 1 and it was like he barely had it - I was a bit worried he wouldn’t be immune, but he hasn’t had it again (nearly 11 now).

dc1 got it first then dcs 2 and 3 came down with it within a day of each other 2 weeks later.

littlepeas · 05/08/2022 11:57

2nd dc1 should be dc3!
