To be starting to really worry about Liz Truss

OK, so I'm not a Tory. I hate Boris, and despise the rest of them. I don't hold or much hope of any of them actually doing anything to address the problems that we're currently facing, because I don't think any of them actually give a toss about ordinary people. Of the two candidates that are left in the Tory leadership contest, I would pick Rishi, because I think he has a more realistic understanding of the economic challenges, but obviously, I'm not a party member so I have no say in the matter.

Nevertheless, I have been relatively sanguine and the prospect of Liz Truss as leader, a) because I figured that things couldn't get much worse than the shit show that we have had under Boris, and b) because I am pretty sure that she will be utterly unelectable when it comes to the next general election, so worst case scenario would be that we have another couple of years of crappy Tory government, exacerbated by the cost of living crisis, and then we can be pretty confident of getting shot of them. So, pretty shit all in all, but survivable.

But listening to everything that she is saying she wants to do, to the economic forecasts, and to the analysis from both within and beyond the Tory party, I'm starting to get really very worried. All this talk of huge tax cuts and massive reductions in public spending...I fear that she is going to make the looming economic crisis infinitely worse at a time when we can least afford to risk it. Nearly all economists seem to agree that her plans are going to make things worse, not better.

We are already at breaking point. Public services are on their knees. Businesses are struggling to stay afloat. People both in work and out of work are struggling. The most vulnerable are already having to choose between bare essentials such as eating and heating. Inflation continues to soar, energy prices are going off the scale, interest rates are going up... and she is about to make it worse! We just don't have the resilience in the system to cope with this.

I am actually very worried about what is going to happen. This could be very bad indeed, and a lot of people are going to suffer. If we end up with austerity on steroids in the midst of an unprecedented economic crisis, there will be massive civil unrest, surely?

Warning - a fuller video of Johnson dancing with his "child wife" has surfaced... Nero fiddling comes to mind.

Is that really Boris? His wife is about 36, not exactly a child is she?!
Also is that a wedding or something? People filming him as if they are surprised, he’s there? but surely the people there are all his friends , family?

vera99 · 06/08/2022 14:21

If only we hadn't abandoned FOM of movement and had 10s of thousands of hard-working caring staff for our care and NHS services. The Leave vote was of big fuck off to those people so a goodly proportion of those did just that.

How dare they leave our country and not do the jobs that we don't want to do.

8.7% of doctors and 5.6% of nurses are EU nationals
EU nationals make up 8.7% of doctors in England’s hospital and community health services. They also make up 5.6% of all nurses and 5.8% of scientific, therapeutic and technical staff. The percentage of doctors and nurses with EU nationality grew between 2009 and 2016. Since 2016, those percentages have fallen.
The most common EU nationalities in the NHS are Irish, Polish, and Portuguese.

I have never voted Tory. But if I did vote in the current race I'd vote for Rishi. He is an over privileged dick but I think he is more competent.

vera99 · 06/08/2022 14:25

That really is Boris at his JCB magnates paid for wedding party obviously filmed by one of the guests. She's looking pretty good but the optics remind me of creepy old men with much younger mail order brides. Anyway doesn't look like our war leader is worried about putting in the hours now - he has left the building and probably sunning himself at a billionaires villa somewhere nice. With his phone switched off.

vera99 · 06/08/2022 14:28

@millymog11 I agree my experience of Goldman Sachs types are they are some of the sharpest guys around and totally focused on the prize. Deep down as much as I want to I don't hate him and think in the right context he could do a great job with the right constraints. Liz Truss however just parrots slogans and barely remembered briefings. DELIVERY,DELIVERY,DELIVERY - she should work as a midwife.

Sporty2022 · 06/08/2022 14:32

Oh yes just saw it was Boris and Carries wedding. The guests there are obviously all Tory part members and his friends. Obviously someone threw him under the bus by leaking it.

Absolutely. They can't trust eachother but they expect the country to trust them?🤦‍♀️

I agree. I'm a woman and I don't have much professional to add to my name (solicitor of many years single mum etc) but I think Rishi is the right person. It might be a hard road but I'd prefer that and would make changes in order for that to happen.

vera99 · 06/08/2022 14:52

Sorry for the derail which I started but that video was probably shared by the taker to a number of friends and that's probably when it got leaked. Either BJ doesn't give a shit (which is likely) or he was stupid not to nail down the no photos rule that celebs like the Beckhams do. Or maybe I'm overthinking something quite trivial.

TooBigForMyBoots · 06/08/2022 14:57

Here's a letter from Liz Truss to Baroness Faulkner sent earlier this year. In it Truss says:
The government is committed to maintaining the safeguards that allow organisations to provide single sex services. The Equality Act makes it clear that providers have the right to restrict use of spaces on the basis of sex as currently takes place. The government has no interest in changing the current situation where transgender people are able to chose the facilities of their chosen gender. I very much support your attempts to correct the record and know you will be seeking to engage and reassure LGBT groups on these issues privately too.

There is so much wrong with this, particularly that the "reassurance" exists for LGBT groups, not women, and that it should be done "privately".Hmm

How anyone can still claim to vote Conservative to protect women's rights is beyond me. The Conservative Party doesn't give a shit about women.Angry

I pay a shedload of tax and am excited by tax cuts. Love Liz Truss.

Okay Liz. Bye now.

If they have decided in favour of single sex spaces why would women need reassurance?

@TwoProngedFork thanks I will accept the award humbly ...

The wonderful JOE channel has done a 7-minute version of her most mental moments... she's a fake and not a very good one at that.

Liz Truss says the provision of single sex spaces is at the providers discretion. And that transfolk can chose the facilities of their chosen gender. We have seen male bodied people chose to be on female wards, in female prisons etc. And the Tory government have granted access to these services. And more.

There is nothing reassuring for women in Liz Truss's words.

I'm actually starting to contemplate the possibility that she might even turn out to be worse than Boris, which I never thought was possible. But she seems very gung ho about her economic strategy, while Boris wasn't really that bothered about anything other than himself and could therefore be steered by others in slightly safer direction.

I couldn't agree more.

vera99 · 06/08/2022 18:11

I can remember PMs and leaders of the opposition all the way back to Harold Wilson, all had gravitas and innate intelligence and the ability to command their posts for good or bad. With Truss, she's both fairly thick without self-knowledge of her own limitations and lacks any charisma or charm with which to get others on her side to which is plain dangerous. Teresa May seems a giant in comparison - words I thought I would never utter this side of insanity.

Diamondsareforever123 · 06/08/2022 18:30

This country has been in freefall since the 2008 crash. We got the Tories in 2010 and they gave us Brexit - the most moronic action ever, it's made our economic situation much worse after Covid and the war in the Ukraine. The Tories brought Boris in to get brexit done. Well that's about the only thing he did achieve. We are left with two extreme right wingers as contenders for PM. What have they said about the crisis in the UK, climate change? Zilcho! Truss is certifiable and thick. Sunak has at least some experience of economics. But if Truss gets in we are heading for a very bad time. There's going to be civil unrest as people will be starving this winter - that's why Priti Patel has given tasers to special police. I honestly don't think people realise just how bad it's going to get. The thing that peeves me most is that only 160,000 privileged people get to decide on the new leader. Whoever voted Tory on this site should hang your heads in shame because your vote will have created destitution, starvation and despair.

vera99 · 06/08/2022 18:33

@Diamondsareforever123 👏👏👏👏👏👏

millymog11 · 06/08/2022 18:38

Yes.

Diamondsareforever- regarding climate change what else can the UK government do ? Without making people even poorer? Climate change is a global effort, why should the UK population suffer by paying green taxes when other countries don’t give a shit?
We can’t all afford electric cars.
The net zero by 2050 is already set, 30 years isn’t that long to do this.

But I take your point about the crisis in the UK, no one seems to have any solution to that.

Regarding the Tories giving us Brexit, they gave us the vote and it backfired on them. However UKIP were becoming a threat to the Tories , they actually got more votes than the Lib Dems in 2015.

Truss and Sunak should be gripping the energy and fuel companies by the balls but neither of them will. They’re making huge profits whilst all of us are struggling. Sunaks answer is to print more money off to pay them.

So if a politician is pictured standing in front of an EU flag is that also "sinister flag shagging"?

Sporty2022 · 06/08/2022 19:55

But yes, people haven’t seen how bad it will get. We’re in summer and the heatings off. Wait til this winter. People won’t be able to pay their heating bills whilst Truss and Sunak do fuck all about it.
