To announce I have Covid at beginning of job interview

I've got Covid (for the first time). Started throwing up last week, and still 10 days later I feel bloody awful & the test is showing us as strong as ever I thought it would be easier than this (vaccinated, healthy etc).

Also - I feel really depressed. Is that normal? Like so sad. No energy and everything around me seems totally rubbish.

Anyway, I have been off work but today I have a job interview (on Teams). I didn't tell them because I presumed I would be OK by now.

Do I just crack on with it? Or do I say it at the beginning or does that sound like an excuse for being rubbish?

It's in a couple of hours and I can't seem to prepare at all.

If you feel that unwell why not ring them and reschedule?

EmmaH2022 · 04/08/2022 10:55

I would reschedule. If you don't, then tell them right away.

hope you feel better asap Flowers

BumbleBumbleB · 04/08/2022 11:00

I agree, reschedule because if you haven't been able to prepare you might not get a second chance to give it your best shot even if you do tell them you have COVID.

There is of course a risk that they find another candidate in the meantime but you'd like to think they would let you reschedule if they liked your CV to interview you in the first place

I had an (remote) interview in March while I had Covid. I emailed in advance to say that I was happy to go ahead or reschedule, whichever they preferred.

It went ahead, I got the job. I started last month. It was actually a good ice breaker - the panel and I all comparing Covid symptoms Grin

You should have said something sooner. But you didn't so tell them af the start.

Why?

You can't catch it via Zoom 🙄

squashyhat · 04/08/2022 11:14

Which door? She will be on Teams.

Brefugee · 04/08/2022 11:15

sorry have reported own post for not having read the OP.
Mea culpa and many apologies, OP.

In your shoes? I'd ask to reschedule. Your symptoms sound awful, i hope you feel better soon.

Yes, I think this is pretty normal. I've just recovered from covid and I felt like this a lot. I have moderate depression anyway (managed by antidepressants and talking therapy) but this felt different; more physically derived, somehow. It has lifted the last couple of days, so it does pass.

Everyone I've spoken to who's had covid recently has gone 'oh yeah, me too!' when I mention the flat/depressed/sad/no effort thing.

BuanoKubiamVej · 04/08/2022 11:25

I would let them know that you have it,, that you didn't say so before as you were expecting to have recovered, that you are happy to go ahead but that you aren't at your best and have been unable to do as much preparation as you would have liked so a reschedule would be welcome if possible but if they need to see everyone today you will do your best

BenjiLove · 04/08/2022 19:56

OH GOD. I said it at beginning of interview that i had covid. The interviewer looked entirely unconcerned and said "I presume you're OK to go ahead?"

I nodded sheepishly

I then proceeded to spout the biggest load of nonsense of my life. The questions were long and I couldn't even concentrate enough to get to the end of them. I had no words, no ideas. A sweaty stumbling mess with a croaky voice. I said "strategy" a lot.

Awful. Back to bed for the rest of my life.

Aww, that’s miserable. It definitely can affect you mentally. You tried despite being ill, it’s just bad timing.
