If one parent is an alcoholic with children. Should the other parent leave them?

Loving family except for one (highly functioning) alcoholic parent. Becoming sober is unlikely.

Should the other parent

  1. Bring children up with both parents at home.

  2. Separate from partner so children are not brought up in a household with alcoholism.

Leave. Without a doubt. The drinking escalated to abuse and I finally kicked him out. He got worse and continues to try and control me now. Best thing I ever did.

@essex42 yes mine did this, rehab, then very long periods of sobriety which gave us all false hope. He’s dead now and we are all completely broken. I wouldn’t recommend waiting around to see if alcoholics sober up. They mostly don’t.

Even functioning alcoholics don't hide it well from DC.

It can have a very negative impact on them.
