To think that holiday let owners with 'unusual' house rules should have to make them clear on the advert?

We're regular holiday let-stayers as a we have loads of kids (5), and so have seen a variety of 'house rules' over the years. We're currently staying in an otherwise lovely holiday let that has a house rule that 'all refuse and recycling must be removed from the property'. We're not staying very remotely (small town on the coast close to other small towns) so I can't see any 'need' for this rule other than to cut down the cleaning at the end. Having to remove all our litter (which I'm trying to keep on top of as we go) is making me increasingly cross. I'm not saying I definitely wouldn't have booked if we'd seen this rule, but I certainly would have considered other options more carefully first!

Cheer me up with your tales of the weirdest - unexpected - house rules you've come across in a holiday let!

Yes they should I agree

NoAprilFool · 03/08/2022 09:14

I’m wondering if you’re staying where we’re going next week - same rules!! Part of our deposit will be withheld if they have to dispose of any rubbish/recycling

Embarras83 · 03/08/2022 09:14

Where are you in the UK? Here in France it’s common for example there have been two collections while we are here but there are large bin areas exactly for this purpose dotted around.

Greenandcabbagelooking · 03/08/2022 09:15

Doesn’t it just mean remove rubbish from inside bins and put in the wheelie bin outside. That seems quite reasonable to me.

NiceTwin · 03/08/2022 09:15

Do you mean rubbish should go in the outside bins?

PuffinMcStuffin · 03/08/2022 09:15

I don't understand, surely when you leave a holiday let you leave it as you found it and empty the bins anyway?

Steakandquinoa · 03/08/2022 09:15

I don’t understand- do they mean you have to take your rubbish home with you or just put it in the bin outside?

liveforsummer · 03/08/2022 09:15

I thought removing rubbish was a totally standard rule? Saves having to pay the cleaner extra time for rubbish drops outside the home and also if they aren't in straight away, potential for smells/flies etc

starlingsintheslipstream · 03/08/2022 09:16

Wow - hope that's not a new trend. What do they expect you to do with it? Tips here are for residents only and I would have thought it's classed as fly tipping to get rid of it in a normal litter bin.

Thehop · 03/08/2022 09:16

No way would I cart my rubbish home with me! I’d make it clear in my review what I thought of that! No reason you can’t use the bins!

Faveusernamewastaken · 03/08/2022 09:16

I’m a holiday let owner and wouldn’t say that’s unreasonable at all, it’s a health and safety and basic hygiene issue. Leaving rubbish would smell and could attract vermin etc and also the changeover team may not be arriving same day. Self-catering let rubbish is different from an occasional rubbish bin in a hotel room.

SilverGlassHare · 03/08/2022 09:16

Is this really unusual? We always have had to empty the bins when we self-cater. Or do they mean you can't use their outside bins/recycling either and have to take your rubbish away with you completely, because that would really annoy me.

fudfootedfannybangle · 03/08/2022 09:17

The cynic in me is wondering whether they’ve been threatened with business rates for rubbish collection.

musnt get in the way of profit!

maranella · 03/08/2022 09:17

That's an unusual rule? I'd never leave rubbish in a rental property and would always put it out in the bins before departing.

FineWordsForAPorcupine · 03/08/2022 09:17

Have I misunderstood - to me that seems like a very normal request to empty the bins when you leave?

Having to remove all our litter (which I'm trying to keep on top of as we go) is making me increasingly cross

Wouldn't you usually keep on top of any litter? Surely it's not OK to just leave it lying around?

Or have I got the wrong end of the stick?

At least they told you about it ahead of time - this was news to me as I was nonchalantly flicking through the information left in the house!

Yes I'm struggling to see how that's an unusual rule ??

CeeceeBloomingdale · 03/08/2022 09:18

Putting your rubbish out is completely normal in holiday lets, it's hardly unusual.

Hugasauras · 03/08/2022 09:18

Yes, do they mean you can't even use their outside bins?! As that's ridiculous. Otherwise doesn't it just mean that at the end of your stay you take all the rubbish from inside the house and stick it in outside bin?

bsidecside · 03/08/2022 09:18

Steakandquinoa · 03/08/2022 09:15

Well they obviously can't stipulate what you do with it but it needs to be removed from the property - they provide a 'handy' list of local refuse/recycling centres that you can take it to.

OP posts:
Unescorted · 03/08/2022 09:19

The AirBnB next to us do that because they have not told the council it is occupied / used as a holiday let. The bins don't get collected on bin day.

No - removed from the property - e.g. taken to a refuse/recycling centre (rubbish dump).

Not putting it out - removing it from the property entirely!

Of course it’s unusual to have to take all rubbish/recycling home with you!

You normally leave it in the bins provided or the outside bin.
